Both Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are the only royal (and almost royal) family members to make Time‘s Most Influential People list this year. The list also includes political figures such as Donald Trump, Robert Mueller, and Justin Trudeau, artists like Greta Gerwig, Rihanna, and Kesha, and industry titans Elon Musk and Oprah.
Each honouree receives a special write up from someone who is significant in their life or career. Harry’s mother’s close friend Sir Elton John wrote his write up and it is touching.
“I first met an extremely shy and sweet Prince Harry at a private lunch at Kensington Palace, given by his mother Princess Diana for Gianni Versace and me many years ago,” says John. “What a joy it has been to see that young boy grow to inherit his mother’s warmth, sense of humour and courage to stand up and champion the causes he truly believes in.”
He goes on to say how they’ve bonded over their shared passion for ending the global AIDS crisis and admires his passion for speaking about issues surrounding mental health by “blowing a much-needed breath of fresh air into the British stuffiness that has kept vital conversations lurking in the shadows.”
He ends the passage by describing Harry’s ability to make people feel at ease around him, much like his mother Diana did.
“Prince Harry has that rare ability to walk into a room full of strangers and make everyone feel comfortable and at ease. As he has grown in maturity, I have watched him take on these causes with the remarkable skill to see and communicate how it truly feels for the people he is trying to help,” says John.
Meghan Markle also landed a spot on the list with her friend and fellow actress Priyanka Chopra writing an inspirational and heartfelt write up. She starts by saying “somewhere among biryani, poutine and endless conversations, I realized just how deeply Meghan Markle cares for the world.” Meghan Markle loves poutine! How relatable.
“Her compassion, evident in the causes she supports, and her drive to break down stereotypes—obvious in her actions—will connect her to a generation in much need of kindness,” continues Chopra. “This ever-smiling, strong free spirit found her prince, fell in love and in turn made a cynical world believe in fairy tales again.” Ugh, so true. Where’s my prince charming?
Chopra continues to connect Markle to her fiancee’s late mother, who was known herself as “the People’s Princess”.
“But more than anything else, Meghan is an important influencer in a world that needs strong public figures to respect and look up to. People the world can be inspired by. Meghan, standing shoulder to shoulder with Harry, will be a princess for the people,” she says.
Chopra has previously spoken about how her friend Markle is the perfect addition to the royal family.
“I don’t think anybody else would be able to do it the way she will. She’s just right for it,” she says. “She’s an icon, truly, that girls can look up to, that women can look up to. She’s normal, she’s sweet, she’s nice, she thinks about the world, wants to change it and this was even before any of this happened.”
Clearly, the almost newlywed couple is an inspiration to many and we can’t wait to see how they change the world together. Time truly got it right with these two!
