The royal family is down a Duke, which means it's time for other members of the family to take on more duties. And, in royal fashion, receive new, longer titles. Prince William’s title as Duke of Cambridge has now been given a very long and prestigious upgrade for the next year, naming him the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Those are going to be very big business cards with very small font. The appointment was given by Queen Elizabeth, who selected her grandson as the recipient of the title for the next year. An annual position, the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland represents the Queen at the General Assembly. According to the palace’s website, “The Lord High Commissioner's role is to maintain the relationship between the State and the Church, and a long-standing tradition of appointing a Lord High Commissioner originated in the latter part of the 16th Century.” What that really means is Prince William’s busy schedule is about to get even busier.[video_embed id='1865800']RELATED: How Prince William is planning to tackle the climate crisis[/video_embed]The Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly makes opening and closing remarks at the week-long General Assembly and reports back on the meeting’s proceedings to the Queen. Prince William will also receive the Guard of Honour, a 21-Gun Salute and the keys to the City of Edinburgh. He’ll also be expected to invite distinguished guests to stay at the Palace and “offer hospitality to Commissioners to the Assembly and those who have contributed to public life in Scotland.” In his new role, Prince William will be following in the footsteps of his father, Prince Charles, as well as his great-aunt, Princess Anne, and his uncle, Prince Edward, who have all previously held the appointment of Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.Prince William’s new appointment is the first major announcement made by the royal family since the shocking exit of Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle earlier this month. After months of discussions, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s hopes that they could continue with some of their royal duties while living a more private life away from the media abuse that Markle has endured since beginning her relationship with Prince Harry were squashed. In a statement made by Buckingham Palace, Harry and Meghan’s new roles as non-royals were outlined. “As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments. They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties,” the announcement read, adding that Harry and Meghan are no longer formal representatives of the Queen, but that “the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.”Harry and Meghan, who are currently living with their son Archie in Canada, will retain their HRH titles but not use them. The couple will also pay for the improvements made last year on Frogmore Cottage, which will remain the family’s home when they’re in Canada.[video_embed id='-1']Before you go: This is what happens when you leave your window cracked during a blizzard[/video_embed]
