Love a comfy, warm puffer vest for cooler weather? You’re in luck. Puffy vests are back for fall and they’re better than ever. While in the ’90s the look was more utilitarian or grunge-chic, today’s vests are a lot more fashionable with a more subtle nod to the ’90s. Today’s vests are not quite as bulky and look a lot less like personal flotation devices than they used to. Whether filled with genuine down or hypo-allergenic lightweight materials, the result is lots of warmth in a more streamlined silhouette. Plus, for 2014, vests come in patterns and have cozy add-ons like cute hoods.

How to wear the trend

Do: Use your vest as a layering piece for warmth. Perfect for fall days that can get quite cool, top a long-sleeve cardigan with a vest.

Don’t: Layer too much. Vests add warmth without adding too much bulk. Don’t add a vest on top of already puffy pieces like heavy sweaters or hoodies.

Do: Try wearing your vest with more dressed-up pieces like work pants or a pencil skirt. Just keep the under-layers and accessories sleek and choose a vest in a dark colour and a slick finish.

Don’t: Go too basic. A vest worn with jogging pants, a hoodie and sneakers will look sloppy. Trade joggers for jeans and sneakers for wedge booties to keep the look stylish and fashionable.
