It’ll be Meghan Markle‘s first official Christmas in the U.K., and as it goes every year, the royals do it up at the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh‘s Sandringham Estate. The big question as of late has been whether or not Prince Harry‘s fiancée will be joining the Windsors since it’s typically a privilege reserved for members of the royal family. The Express, however, is reporting that tradition will be broken and the former actress will be welcome.
“It is expected Meghan will join Harry and the rest of the Royal Family for Christmas on the Queen’s estate in Norfolk this year,” royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told the Express, explaining that unlike past royal members-to-be, Markle’s family lives in the United States, leaving her with only Harry’s side to celebrate with.
“In 2010 Kate was not invited to do so after her engagement to William nor was Mike Tindall after his to the Princess Royal’s daughter Zara Phillips and only spouses and close family are usually invited,” Fitzwilliams continued. “However Harry and Meghan will be living together at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace and her family are in the United States. The monarchy relies heavily on precedent and tradition but it also makes its own.”
Perhaps knowing what their lives would become (Kate, in particular), Kate and Mike wanted one last Christmas with their respective families before their royal lives began. So while many are trying to stir up some sort of rivalry between Kate and Meghan, it seems this is all about being compassionate and considerate, not a slight against Kate and Mike. It’s more about geography than anything else.
Megs’ mom might very well travel to the U.K. to be her daughter, but if not, what are the royals going to do — let her spend the day alone while they celebrate in Sandringham? They’re not grinches! Or maybe with all the attention that comes with her engagement to Harry, she’ll relish the alone time. Meghan’s a grown woman who knew what the deal was going into it and she’ll likely be fine with whatever happens.
