Dating is difficult in the best of circumstances, but for single parents, finding a partner that not only clicks with you but also with your child can prove to be an added layer of difficulty. For actor Rachel Bilson, she knows that the only way she’s willing to get close to someone is if that person is welcoming to her child as well.

Bilson, who is mom to 4-year-old Briar with her ex Hayden Christensen, appeared on Nick Viall’s podcast this week and talked about her long career in Hollywood, including her starring roles on The OC and Hart Of Dixie, as well as navigating parenthood and dating.

Bilson said in order to date someone, they have to be open to life as a single mom. “I was talking to these guys a few months back, any time I would bring my daughter up, they would never pursue the question or ask more about her. It was a red flag because anyone that you’re going to get involved with, if you have a kid, they have to be all about the kid,” said Bilson, who is notoriously private about her personal life.

The actor said that she is always up front about having a child, knowing that it’s better to learn quickly whether someone is interested in kids rather than waste time with someone who wouldn’t be accepting of their role as a stepparent. “I always put it out there. She’s my world and I talk about her all the time. How f**ked up would it be if I hid that?” said Bilson. “If you’re going to pursue something with someone, they have to be interested in the kid or be willing to be around the kid.”

Bilson, who split with Christensen in 2017 after nine years of dating, said that she’s yet to meet anyone who has warranted an introduction to her daughter. “She has not met anyone as of yet and it would have to be someone I know I’m going to be with,” said Bilson. “It would have to be a very serious relationship.”

Thankfully, Bilson has also found the positive side of dating while also being a parent. “Kids are great for an excuse for anything,” she admitted. “If you don’t want to do something, you don’t ever have to lie because, like, you have kids. You can leave early, you can not go and you can go to bed at 9 and it’s awesome. I’m 80 at heart.”

Viall, who got his start in Hollywood on Season 21 of The Bachelor and now hosts The Viall Files, shared a picture of himself and Bilson following their recording session of the podcast. We wonder if Nick likes kids…
