It was a great night for those involved with Bohemian Rhapsody, which took home four Oscars Sunday night. Rami Malek was a shoo-in for Actor in a Leading Role and his acceptance speech was lovely; he expressed his adoration for both his mother and his girlfriend Lucy Boynton, thanked all the necessary people, and referenced how his younger self, “little baba Rami,” would’ve been blown away by it all.
“That kid was struggling with his identity, trying to figure himself out, and I think to anyone struggling with theirs, and trying to discover their voice: listen, we made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life just unapologetically himself,” he said. “And the fact that I’m celebrating him and this story with you tonight is proof that we’re longing for stories like this.”
Malek added: “I am the son of immigrants from Egypt. I’m a first-generation American. And a lot of my story is being written right now, and I could not be more grateful to each and every one of you, and everyone who believed in me. This moment is something I will treasure for the rest of my life.”
Perfect, right? That’s when it all went downhill. Literally. Shortly after the show concluded, things took a turn when Rami fell. Off the stage.

This was the aftermath:
The Dolby Theatre had already begun clearing out when it happened, so there weren’t too many witnesses. Medics confirmed to the L.A. Times that it looked worse than what actually happened and Malek didn’t fall but “slipped” off the stage.
Rami joins an elite group of accident-prone Oscar winners, including four-time nominee, one-time winner and two-time faller Jennifer Lawrence, who tripped up the stairs while on her way to accept the award for Best Actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, and again the following year when she tumbled out of her limo at the 2014 ceremony.
FYI, Malek was checked out and didn’t suffer any serious injuries. Physically. His pride, however, might be a little bruised. Though he seemed to be just fine once he got backstage.
Yeah, he’ll be OK.
