If you’re not from Texas or New Mexico, you’re forgiven if you didn’t know Frito Pie is a thing. Consisting of a bag of the brand’s original corn chips, an eight-ounce bag of shredded cheese and a can of chili with beef (with or without beans, it’s up to you) that’s been heated, you’ve got yourself a meal for days.
And for those who are a little more health-conscious and don’t want to feel totally guilty, throw in some lettuce, tomatoes, chopped onion and jalapeños, and you can make it prettier by adding a dollop of sour cream (with less fat, if you must). If you’re feeling fancy, you can serve it on a platter but it’s often served right inside the Fritos bag. So wrong yet so right.
But if you feel like spicing up this southern recipe (or sweetening, depending on your palate), here are some other ways to Frito it up. You’re welcome.
If you dig the original Frito Pie but have dietary issues, this is the recipe for you.
Just add chicken broth, shredded chicken, cream and hot sauce to kick it up a notch. Drizzle some ranch dressing over it to make it extra-special.
For that perfect blend of sweet and salty, combine sugar, corn syrup, peanut butter and chocolate and this is the stuff carnival food is made of.
If there’s a chocolate version, you had to know a vanilla one was coming. It involves vanilla pudding, berries and caramel sauce. Corn? Not so much.
Fritos for breakfast? Yes, please. This takes Eggs Benedict to a whole other level, thanks to the chorizo, green chilies and, of course, the Hollandaise.
Hawaiian Pineapple Ham
It’s like getting a taste of the island without having to leave your kitchen. Sorry.
The Cowboy Way
Add some red and green peppers, pork and beans and bacon and giddy up.
If you don’t have the cereal this recipe calls for, corn chips will do in a pinch.
A baked macaroni casserole is one thing, but you can elevate it by throwing in cut-up hot dog and crushed Fritos for texture.
Apple Hash and Pumpkin Gravy
This is probably the most labour-intensive of the bunch and while it sounds kind of scary, don’t judge before you’ve seen what it’s all about. Bonus? This works for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Even pop diva Mariah Carey is into this pie, as we can see in this Funny or Die video:
