After sporting nothing more than a glittery yoke to the CFDA Awards earlier this year, we thought there was nothing Rihanna could wear that would shock us again. Wrong! This week she strutted across the British Fashion Awards red carpet wearing nothing but a diamond choker and an unflattering oversized velvet blazer.

Although RiRi definitely isn’t the first celeb to try and pull off the tuxedo jacket dress — Julianna Hough and J-Lo have both rocked this look — she’s probably one of the first to have attempted this by actually wearing a men’s tuxedo jacket and not a dress fashioned to look like one. Other than being a kind of lazy attempt at getting dressed for the red carpet, the problem with wearing a jacket — particularly one with a single button closure — is that jackets have openings and reveal things like underwear and side boob. Not the classiest way to attend an event that is supposed to celebrate the best of the best in fashion.

We get it RiRi, you want to show off that rocking body, but this over exposure comes across as desperate and a little bit trashy as far as we’re concerned.

The Fix

First off, we love the idea of women rocking masculine looks. Wearing a tuxedo instead of a gown is an awesome way to switch things up on the red carpet and if done right, can be super sexy. Here are a few things Rihanna could have done to improve her look:

Throw on some pants: Sorry, RiRi but there’s a difference between looking sexy and sloppy. Instead of forgoing pants altogether, we would suggest wearing a pair of slim fit trousers that still show off her legs but keep her undies under wraps. We especially like Zara’s Trousers with Side Band ($60 at Zara) for the star because the white tuxedo stripe on the pants would add some interesting contrast paired with her velvet blazer.

And a shirt, maybe?: We know, wearing nothing under a tuxedo jacket sounds sexy, but when you’re wearing a jacket that cuts this deep, a camisole is probably a good idea. French Connection’s Glitter Spells Top ($78 at French Connection) would have made the sexy singer sparkle, and it’s semi-sheer — so it would give the impression of bare skin without the worry of a wardrobe malfunction.

Here’s what else Rihanna has (or hasn’t) worn out in public lately:
