On Monday, Rihanna made a surprise appearance at the ICC Cricket World Cup in Durham. During the match between Sri Lanka and West Indies, she bumped into West Indies assistant coach Roddy Estwick – who also happens to be her high school PE teacher.

The Jamaica Observer shared a video of the heartfelt moment when the two saw each other for the first time in years.

“This is my teacher from school! He was a mentor and father figure to me,” Rihanna commented on the video.  She later posted a photo of them in a loving embrace to her Instagram story, writing “my mentor, my champ, my MVP, my school teacher, my first ‘JayBrown’… #MrEastwick! You made my day.”

Roddy Estwick is a former professional cricketer who played for Barbados in the ’80s. He was also a physical education teacher at the secondary school Rihanna attended there.

“It was good to see her again,” Estwick told the International Cricket Council in an interview after their reunion. “I use to sit with her and her best friends most lunch times. Obviously, growing up as young girls in Barbados isn’t always easy so I was trying to guide them in the right direction and assist in any way I could.”

Since, fans have taken to social media to share memories of their own childhood teachers. Many can’t relate to her seemingly fond recollection of gym class.

While we may not know the details of how he impacted Rihanna’s life, but RiRi’s tears speak volumes. Shout out to Mr. Estwick, and all the other teachers who make a difference in their students’ lives!
