Oh dear. Rihanna has had to do something drastic, and has filed a lawsuit against her own father for misrepresenting her and exploiting their family name.

As most fans know, Riri’s full birth name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, and it looks like her father, Ronald Fenty, along with a business partner, has been exploiting their connection to the pop star to full effect.

Under the guise of a company they called Fenty Entertainment, the pair had, according to the suit, used the Fenty name to make bookings promising the singer would perform various concerts, and other business ventures including starting a chain of boutique hotels. Rihanna herself has used the Fenty name to sell her uber-successful lingerie and cosmetics lines, as well as sneakers. But it seems as though her father was acting without her knowledge, and made quite the killing in the process.

According to court records seen by E!Online, the pair “egregiously and fraudulently misrepresented to third parties and the public that their company, Fenty Entertainment, is affiliated with Rihanna and has the authority to act on her behalf,” and apparently “used these lies in a fraudulent effort to solicit millions of dollars from unsuspecting third parties in exchange for the false promise that they were authorized to act on Rihanna’s behalf and/or that Rihanna would perform at various locations throughout the world.” In fact, they even went so far as to accept an offer of almost $20m ($15m USD), in exchange for Rihanna performing twelve shows across Latin America, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

And according to The Blast, the singer has just filed the suit, citing fraud, false advertising and is requesting an injunction to prevent her father further using their shared name to solicit business. She’ll also be seeking unspecified damages, thank you very much.

It’s a sad and nasty turn for any family relationship to take. And certainly not the first time someone of Rihanna’s prominence has had to deal with the shady misdeeds of unscrupulous relatives. And given that she already has a fractured relationship with him, thanks to violence he inflicted on her mother when she was growing up, this latest behaviour is sure to be deeply distressing. We just hope she can resolve it and move on, with minimal damage to her health, relationships, and reputation in the meantime.
