When Robin Thicke was plucked out of obscurity and thrust into the spotlight with his hit “Blurred Lines,” no one could have predicted how quickly his life would spiral out of control. After all of his crazy antics, his wife of nine years has finally filed for divorce. So how did Mr. Thicke take the news? Of course, he — allegedly — celebrated by throwing himself a divorce party, complete with models and Leonardo DiCaprio. Random, right? This, however, isn’t the first time Mr. Thicke has disappointed people. Let’s take a look back at his many, many transgressions:
From the very start, Thickey boy has been stirring the pot. After putting out six albums in relative obscurity, one of his songs finally made it big. Unfortunately that song was “Blurred Lines,” which rubbed many people the wrong way. And understandably so, considering the lyrics included “I hate these blurred lines, I know you want it,” and “…you’re an animal, baby, it’s in your nature, just let me liberate you.” In other words, it was “kind of rapey” as The Daily Beast put it.
To make matters worse, “Blurred Lines” — which turned out to be the summer anthem of 2013 — was accompanied by not one, but two music videos. One came complete with beautiful nude women shaking their stuff for #Thicke, while the other was a “PG” version. Both were exceedingly creepy. Many weren’t impressed.
The VMA Incident
Then, while people were still trying to recover from his earworm of a song, Robin decided to hop on the Miley Cyrus train — figuratively speaking (and, sadly, literally as well). At the MTV Video Music Awards, the 36-year-old husband, father, and Beetlejuice look-a-like took to the stage and
performed gyrated on the then-20-year-old Cyrus.
It was creepy. And very awkward to watch. Just ask Will Smith’s family.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, Thicke then totally dogged Miley by claiming he had no idea she was going to make that move. Be quiet, Robin, you knew well and good what was about to go down on that stage.
Not long after that, this scandalous picture emerged:
No, that is not Robin’s wife, and no, that is not Robin’s wife’s butt that Robin is grabbing. Gross, gross, gross. It looked like Thicke’s fame was getting to him, and soon enough his marital problems emerged. Paula Patton, who began dating him in 1993 and married him in 2005, decided to separate from her “Blurred Lines” husband.
The Very Misguided Effort
Cue Mr. Thicke’s very pathetic attempt to win back the love of his life. Instead of doing what any normal cheater would do — apologize in private — the silly man thought it was appropriate to take every opportunity to profess his love to her in public settings. He did it at concerts. He did it at award shows. He did it pretty much everywhere he went. It was pretty sad.
It looked like Paula wasn’t paying him no mind.
The Even More Misguided Effort
So he took it a step further by dedicating a whole album to her. ONE WHOLE ALBUM FOR HIS ESTRANGED WIFE. Of course Thicke likes to go big or go home so naturally the music videos that accompanied some of the songs included his private text messages with Patton. She must have loved that, Robin.
The Denial: Part 2
You’re probably wondering “What else could this jerk do to disappoint us some more?” Well, here’s anotherThicke-headed move he made. Robin is being sued by the family of legendary singer Marvin Gaye for apparently ripping off Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up” and using it in “Blurred Lines.”
Which is why Thicke is now distancing himself from the land of the blurred, and throwing Pharrell Williams under the bus while he’s at it. In the beginning he said he helped write the song, but now he’s changed his tune. Robin says he was high on a mix of prescription drugs and alcohol and that he was just lucky enough to be there when Pharrell penned the tune. Can you believe this guy?!
