Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is known for a lot of things: battling for abortion rights and sexual equality, her 24-year tenure in the Supreme Court, constantly featuring in powerful people lists and being an all-around bad ass, to name a few. But one thing you may not have not known about Bader Ginsburg is that she has an international scrunchie collection.
That’s right, apart from her signature black robe, Bader Ginsburg can often be seen sporting a scrunchie that finishes off her signature polished low ponytail. “I have been wearing scrunchies for years,” she told the Wall Street Journal. She’s also picked up quite a few from her international travels. “My best scrunchies come from Zurich. Next best, London, and third best, Rome,” she continues.
Not one to shy away from fashion, Bader Ginsburg is often seen accessorizing her uniform with lace collars and gloves. “My scrunchie collection is not as large as my collar and glove collections, but scrunchies are catching up,” the judge reveals.
Scrunchies — popularized in the ’80s and ’90s and mocked famously by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City — have experienced somewhat of a renaissance in the last few years. With Bader Ginsburg giving her seal approval to the divisive hair accessory, maybe it’s finally time to give that fabric covered elastic another try.
