Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have been married since 2012 and together a year longer than that, so one would assume she’s used to his sense of humour. But for Lively’s 32nd birthday, we wonder if even she knew what lay in wait on Instagram from her dear husband.

It started off OK, actually. The first photo was the two of them together, both in black, with Ryan wearing a huge smile on his face and Blake laughing like he just told her something hilarious. The caption was also simple: “Happy Birthday, @blakelively.” Hmm. Almost too simple. Because if there’s one thing Reynolds is aces at, it’s funny, clever captions. And sure enough, once you click through the remaining pictures in the series, the pieces come together; rather than using his signature brand of wit in the caption, he let the photos do the talking, and chose pics of Lively with her eyes closed in every single shot.

Happy Birthday, @blakelively.

Clearly not the best photos of Blake, but she had to know it was coming. The couple — who share two daughters, James, 4, and Inez, 2, and are currently awaiting the arrival of baby no. 3 — are known for their bantering on social media, particularly on their respective birthdays. In 2017, Ryan wished his “amazing wife” a happy birthday and the pic he chose would’ve been lovely — had he, in what would be a sign of what was to come, not cropped half of her out of the frame. But one doesn’t stay married to a clown like Reynolds for this long without learning a few things. Two months later, she got revenge, writing, “Happy birthday, baby,” alongside a photo of Ryan Gosling and only part of Reynolds’ face. Well played, Blake.

Earlier this month, Reynolds gushed about a gift Lively bought him, but still found a way to take a jab at her. It was a painting by Danny Galieote of his childhood home. In his Instagram post, Ryan explained all the details Blake got right — before doing his thing.

Over the years, the couple have seemed almost too perfect, but that hasn’t stopped rumours of their marriage being on the rocks. In 2018, the International Business Times India reported that Ryan and Blake were “struggling to spend ‘quality time'” with one another and tagged the actor on Twitter. Leave it to Reynolds to not only respond with humour and grace but also shut down the rumours immediately.

And while we’re used to Ryan Insta-trolling Blake, Humans of New York caught the couple at the 2017 Met Gala (prior to those epic birthday posts), where he had some truly loving, swoon-worthy things to say about his wife. No, really. You can’t help but love these two. But we can’t wait to see what Blake’s got in store for Ryan’s birthday this year.
