The traditional “first kiss” between a Canadian sailor and their loved one is always a celebrated act, but yesterday’s was also historic.

When Master Seaman Francis Legare stepped off the HMCS Winnipeg in Victoria, B.C., he gave a warm embrace and kiss to his same-sex partner Corey. It’s believed to be the first-ever “first kiss” between two male sailors, according to CTV News.

Legare, who’s been at sea for 255 days says he’s speechless and glad he was able to take part in this sweet historic act. And it looks like his crew members gave him their full support.

“I think it’s wonderful,” said HMCS Winnipeg’s Commanding Officer Jeff Hutchinson to CTV News. “The Canadian Armed Forces embraces people whatever their preferences are, and I think it’s great.”
