Sam Smith has been soothing listeners with his incredible voice for years and now the singer is once again bringing some peace and feelings of acceptance to his many fans. The English singer opened up in a vulnerable and raw Instagram post on Tuesday morning and shared the words that have helped him cope with his own issues and insecurities. Sam Smith is enough and so are you.

Smith shared the message while on holiday in Scotland, admitting that the past year and a half has been the most challenging of his life. Without going into detail on what exactly has been the main cause of stress for Smith, the singer keeps things broad, writing “I’ve watched and read so much over the last 6 months to try and make sense of all the mess in my head. Tried to find ways to organise all of my problems so that they are bound and organised into folders and boxes, so that they will never haunt me or effect me again.”

Smith goes on to quote vulnerability researcher and motivational speaker Brene Brown, saying “But I’m slowly starting to realise that the words above are the only words that really matter…. and they are the words of the incredible @brenebrown …. ‘You are enough’.” Smith has obviously been Netflix and chilling.

It appears that the work Smith has put in on addressing his emotional and mental health is paying off, with the Grammy-winner writing “That mess in your mind is not a mess. It is who you are. By constantly trying to change and seek perfection and a life of no pain only causes more pain I am realising. Still on course and learning but feeling the closest I’ve ever felt to a real space of joy, gratitude and peace.”

Smith concludes his message by saying that he hopes to help others as he’s been helped. “I know we are all dealing with some really heavy shit at times. And I find listening to words from strangers comforting. So hopefully sometimes I can be that stranger to you guys. Now every morning and every night before you go to bed. Say these words to yourself in the mirror. I’m gonna do it to. We are in this together.”

Just wanted to share a little thought with you all. Sitting here on my first holiday in a long long time. Looking back on a year and a half of therapy and what has been probably the most challenging time of my short 27 years here. I’ve watched and read so much over the last 6 months to try and make sense of all the mess in my head. Tried to find ways to organise all of my problems so that they are bound and organised into folders and boxes, so that they will never haunt me or effect me again. But I’m slowly starting to realise that the words above are the only words that really matter…. and they are the words of the incredible @brenebrown …. ‘You are enough’ That mess in your mind is not a mess. It is who you are. By constantly trying to change and seek perfection and a life of no pain only causes more pain I am realising. Still on course and learning but feeling the closest I’ve ever felt to a real space of Joy, gratitude and peace. Sorry to blab on. But I know we are all dealing with some really heavy shit at times. And I find listening to words from strangers comforting. So hopefully sometimes I can be that stranger to you guys. Now every morning and every night before you go to bed. Say these words to yourself in the mirror. I’m gonna do it to. We are in this together 🙏🏻 Hope you’re all having a gorgeous summer x

Smith’s post quickly garnered hundreds of thousands of likes, with fans and many of his famous friends applauding Smith for his words of encouragement. “Stay strong man your doing all the right things … sometimes the questions in our heads don’t have answers and that’s ok we have a lifetime to find them,” writes fellow British singer and former One Direction member Liam Payne. “You are enough,” adds British Vogue editor Edward Enniful, with songwriter and OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder chiming in with a succinct “Well put man.”

Tuesday’s post is Smith’s latest move towards sharing more of his personal life with fans. In February, the singer posted a photo of himself on a beach and wrote about his struggle to accept his body. “In the past if I have ever done a photo shoot with so much as a t-shirt on, I have starved myself for weeks in advance and then picked and prodded at every picture and then normally taken the picture down. Yesterday I decided to fight the fuck back. Reclaim my body and stop trying to change this chest and these hips and these curves that my mum and dad made and love so unconditionally,” wrote Smith.

Every time we think we can’t love Sam Smith any more than we already do, he drops a bona fide bop, a stunning ballad, a beautiful message of encouragement, or a hilarious peek inside his brilliant mind and we fall even harder.

In the past if I have ever done a photo shoot with so much as a t-shirt on, I have starved myself for weeks in advance and then picked and prodded at every picture and then normally taken the picture down. Yesterday I decided to fight the fuck back. Reclaim my body and stop trying to change this chest and these hips and these curves that my mum and dad made and love so unconditionally. Some may take this as narcissistic and showing off but if you knew how much courage it took to do this and the body trauma I have experienced as a kid you wouldn’t think those things. Thank you for helping me celebrate my body AS IT IS @ryanpfluger I have never felt safer than I did with you. I’ll always be at war with this bloody mirror but this shoot and this day was a step in the right fucking direction 👅🤘🏼🍑
