Another day, another non-drama on the internet. Actress Sarah Hyland — better known as Haley Dunphy on the long-running comedy Modern Family — took to Instagram to share a cute moment of her dog Carl, well, just being cute. No sooner did she post a pretty sweet photo of herself, boyfriend Wells Adams and Carl snuggling in bed that all manner of internet gremlins broke loose.

Two more reasons to smile again. My big🥄& furry🥄

A post shared by Sarah Hyland (@sarahhyland) on

Hyland shared one of the slut-shaming messages she received upon posting the photo, criticizing her for supposedly sharing her sexual life, shouting in all-caps, “KEEP YOUR SEXUAL LIFE PRIVATE.” Uh, as far as we could tell, she did. Which left Hyland no choice but to hit back with a firm message expressing her frustration, sarcastically posting, “Hey guysssss. I’m explaining myself again! Aren’t you so happy???? Isn’t this what twitter is for???”

In a four page clapback letter, Hyland noted that she shared the photo simply because she thought it was cute, and wanted to continue sharing on social media with her fans. And while she does appreciate privacy, she still loves the people who follow and share their stories with her, so she will continue to share her own.

The actress also pointed out that the assumption that she and her boyfriend were naked was just that – an assumption.

Regardless, we’re pretty sure having a cuddly moment with your BF and little canine buddy, clothed or not, is really nothing to be uncomfortable with. It’s simply capturing a real, day-to-day moment, and sharing it with whoever’s interested. And who can blame her for wanting to share the cuteness of the moment? Can’t we all relate? As Hyland said, “I just have to say I’m so sorry… FOR POSTING AN ADORABLE PICTURE BECAUSE CARL WAS ACTING LIKE THE NUGGETIEST SNUGGLW [sic] BUG!.. Couldn’t let that moment pass without a picture.”

We have to ask ourselves, is a woman sharing a sweet, open moment of joy being met with disgust and anger, really where we are in 2017? We sure hope not – we certainly appreciated the cuteness, anyhow.
