So many women have been there: you pull on a pair of Spanx as an extra layer that sucks-in and slims before sliding into a snug dress or skirt. Spanx are a glorious invention. They help create an even more flattering silhouette, smoothing out any undesired bumps or panty lines, plus, they’re a thin material, so you can wear them without anyone noticing…usually.

Actress Sarah Hyland’ s Spanx made an unexpected cameo on the Emmy’s red carpet on Sunday night. The 26-year-old was dressed in a stunning floor-length, orange-and-red Zac Posen gown with a cheeky cut-out at the stomach. Sarah’s got killer abs, so it’s no surprised she opted for this particular foliage-patterned frock.

Unfortunately, Sarah’s stylist must not have mentioned wearing a gown with a midriff cut-out could maybe accidentally expose the pair of Spanks the star had on, which is exactly what ended up happening.

Twitter was the first to point out the malfunction, begging for someone to step in and save the star.

In terms of awkward award show wardrobe malfunctions, Sarah’s ranks pretty low. There was no stumbling, no ripping, no OMG-she’s-going-commando-and-we-saw-EVERYTHING moment. And what makes the actress’ minor mishap even more lovable is how she owned it after the fact.

Sarah has a wicked sense of humour — which must be a prerequisite to work on a show like Modern Family — and uploaded a photo to her Insta account poking fun at her minor wardrobe malfunction.

“Kickstarting fall off with a PSL dress and a splash of spanx 😂,” the star captioned the image.

Exposed Spanx aside, Sarah looked stunning, from her long, loose waves to her smouldering, clay-coloured eye makeup, not to mention the bling she wore on her finger and ears from jeweller Lorraine Schwartz.

There’s a life lesson here: learn to laugh at yourself. Or hire two stylists.
