It looks like we’re not getting a Modern Family spinoff, at least not from Sarah Hyland. Instead, the actor has been linked to a new project with writer Emily V. Gordon, whose biggest credit to date includes earning an Oscar nomination with husband and comedian Kumail Nanjiani for their semi-autobiographical dramedy The Big Sick. So yeah, this should be really good.

Few details have been released about the currently titled Sarah Hyland + Emily V. Gordon Project, but we do know that the pair are taking inspiration from their own health struggles. Gordon fell into a coma and was eventually diagnosed with the systemic autoinflammatory Still’s disease, a period in her life that was heavily featured in The Big Sick. Hyland has been transparent with fans about her life-long medical struggles, which includes kidney dysplasia and endometriosis. The actor has endured years of surgeries, including receiving a kidney transplant from her father, which her body rejected, an event that Hyland has publicly revealed made her suicidal.

In addition to Hyland and Gordon, the new project will also include This Is Us co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger’s studio-based The Walk Up Company. So yeah, this show is going to both make us laugh and make us cry. Like, a lot.

Before news of Hyland’s project with Gordon broke, it appeared as though the young actor was the most likely candidate for a Modern Family spinoff. Her character Hayley Dunphy welcomed twins at the end of Season 10 and with Hyland as one of the breakout stars of the hugely successful sitcom, it seemed certain that Hayley would be the character to continue with the Modern Family world. Hyland is currently filming Modern Family’s 11th and final season and will begin production on her next project with Gordon once filming on the ABC sitcom is complete.

Following the success of The Big Sick, Emily V. Gordon, who spent years working as a therapist before transitioning into comedy, has also signed on to adapt the bestselling Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney novel The Nest into a feature film.

Hyland has starred in a handful of films and TV series throughout her time on Modern Family, appearing on Veronica Mars, Shadowhunters, Vampire Academy and more. Following Hyland’s health struggles, the actor finally enjoyed some good news this year when she announced her engagement with boyfriend Wells Adam. Hyland and Adam, who is best known for his time on Season 12 of The Bachelorette and Season 3 of Bachelor in Paradise, began dating in November 2017.
