The clock is officially ticking down. Thursday night marked the second-to-last episode of Saving Hope (Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on CTV), and if we’re being honest here, we really, really thought this would be the episode that Alex and Charlie would finally walk down the aisle.
But while the wedding planning was in full effect it seemed as though actual nuptials were not in the cards for our favourite star-crossed lovers… at least not yet. Because while they were checking out a potential church that spoke to them, another bride just so happened to fall down the stairs when they arrived, and needed to go to the hospital, asap.
It was there that a parallel universe of sorts unfolded for both Alex and Charlie — everything from the other couple’s names to their belief in fate and curses seemed to align with the doctors’ own histories, and while it was kind of creepy it also forced Alex and Charlie to take a look at their own decisions. And it’s exactly because of that that we think next week’s finale will finally show them taking the plunge.
About time, right?
Meanwhile, the rest of the hospital was as crazy as ever, and it all ended on a massive cliffhanger. No, we’re not talking about Shahir and Jonathan’s struggles, or how they finally found a little girl to adopt. And we’re not talking about Jeremy’s permanent return to Hope Zion following last week’s surprise visit. We’re also not talking about the heartbreaking story involving a middle-aged man who woke from a three-week coma, with no memory past his 19th birthday.
Nope, we’re talking about Jackson and his surprise, super-sized storyline.
When a former drunk turned up at the hospital in need of a new liver and no one would give him a second chance, the man reminded Jackson of his own father — an alcoholic who died by himself in the same way, because his family wouldn’t give him a second chance. The saddest part? Jackson’s dad was actually sober when he died.
And so despite the better advice of pretty much everyone else at the hospital, Jackson tested himself (he was a match) and decided that he was going to be the one to donate his liver to this stranger. We have no idea how many, if any, rules that broke in terms of treating a patient, but we do know that it was a move that put Jackson’s life in danger.
Sadly, by the closing minutes of the episode it seemed like that’s exactly what was happening to Jackson, as his surgery grew complicated and the episode closed without word on whether or not Jackson will actually be okay.
Because our hearts really needed to be put through another ringer with this show. Geesh.
Heading into next week’s finale, that means we can add Jackson’s fate to the growing list of questions we have about this series. Will Alex and Charlie finally wed? What about Dawn and Zach? Will Charlie ever actually find out if Luke is his son, or will he be content letting it rest? And what about Charlie’s career? Will he ever return to the hospital? And if he does, could he possibly stop seeing ghosts?
It’s a lot to answer with just one episode left. But if this show has taught us anything, it’s to hold onto hope.
