Last night’s Emmy Awards had many people talking, from the star-studded golden carpet to the epic song-and-dance numbers, but an unexpected topic of conversation was Scarlett Johansson’s newest — and permanent — accessory: a giant back tattoo.

The star arrived on the red carpet wearing an off-the-shoulder Balmain gown which revealed the top portion of her new ink. The colourless design, which sits in the middle of her back between her shoulder blades, features three large roses on a vine, and what appears to be a little lamb to the right.

Although this is the first time that Scarlett intentionally showed off her back tat, Refinery29 speculated the new ink back in 2017 when paparazzi photographed her from behind on set of Avengers. The ink was visible, but it was unclear whether or not it was permanent or if it was part of her costume for the role.

While many celebs have been opting for smaller (read: cuter) tattoos in recent years, it seems as though big tattoos like Scarlett’s are still a thing for some. Take Justin Bieber’s ever-growing collection of ink, for example, which includes massive designs including a bald eagle, a grizzly bear and even a portrait of his ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez.

Or what about Ben Affleck’s ginormous colourful phoenix tattoo covering his back, which he tried to claim was for a role.

Lady Gaga has her fair share of large pieces, too, including a unicorn on her thigh and a portrait of David Bowie on her ribs.

Even Rihanna revealed a large tattoo design of an Egyptian goddess on her chest which pays tribute to her late Grandmother.

It’s clear that Scarlett is in good company, but it will be interesting to see whether or not her new “body art” will restrict her from being hired for future acting roles. That said, her appearance hasn’t stopped her from landing roles in the past, like in 2016 when she played the role of an Asian character, or more recently when she was originally cast as a trans man in the film Rub & Tug. Until then, we’ll wait patiently to see what poor decision Scar Jo makes next.
