You’re on Instagram because you just took an amazing picture of your dog. Sure, that dog is going to get a lot of likes no matter what, but science has sorted out which filters get more likes and comments.
Researchers at Yahoo Labs reviewed 7.6 million Flickr photos (most originating on Instagram and then uploaded to Flickr) and determined that filtered photos are “21 per cent more likely to be viewed and 45 per cent more likely to be commented on.”
The focus of this particular study was filters and their impact. And it turns out, people really like images with high contrast and corrected exposure, and they prefer warmer temperatures over cool. In Instagram terms, we’re talking Mayfair, Rise, X-Pro II and Valencia.
So, while you may think that you’ve arbitrarily picked your filter(s) of choice, you’ve probably chosen it because it’s the most pleasing to you (and the 21 to 45 per cent of people who are just like you!).
