The future is officially here.

Scientists in B.C. have discovered a way to print human tissue, much in the same way computers print on paper. A company called Aspect Biosystems has developed a 3D printer where, rather than loading it with ink cartridges, you load it with living cells.

The technology behind it is so secret, the printer wasn’t allowed to be shown on camera. That’s also why, unfortunately, we can’t tell you much about how it works. But we do know they’re working on modifying the technology to produce all kinds of human tissue including liver, kidney and gastrointestinal.

“The 3D structure that we get at the end is actually an assembly of living human cells,” said Dr. Konrad Walus, co-founder of Aspect Biosystems. “Ultimately we’d like to make printable organs.”

That’s probably not far off, either, considering printable prosthetic limbs are already a thing. But unlike traditional models which typically sell for thousands of dollars, the University of Victoria can print one off for $100. That’s part of the beauty of this technology.

“By making them at a far lower cost you can now provide them to areas of the world that could not afford those sorts of technologies before,” Nikolai Dechev, UVIC Director of Biomedical Engineering says in the video above.
