Selena Gomez is slowly making her way back into the public eye after taking some time away from the spotlight to focus on her mental health and one of her first major appearances involves supporting her friend’s new bathing suit line. That’s fitting. Gomez has a long history of being a ride or die friend and looking great in bikinis.

Gomez’s former assistant Theresa Mingus launched her first bathing suit line called Krahs Swim on May 2, with Gomez herself designing three of the pieces. Called Selena x Krahs Swim, the limited-edition suits include a zip-up one piece (Selena one piece, $96 USD), a classic bikini top (Selena top, $69 USD), and a pair of high-waisted bikini bottoms (Selena bottom, $69 USD) that Gomez designed specifically to cover up the scar left by her 2017 life-saving kidney transplant.

Calling Mingus her ‘best friend,’ Gomez dedicated an Instagram post to the designer this week, writing “She has taught me how to see life in a fun, carefree and uplifting way. She has shown me how to be a strong and fearless woman. She is beautiful, kind and smart. I saw how capable she was of achieving her dreams. I wanted nothing more than to see her pursue them and soar.”

In a promo video for the new brand, Gomez says that she likes suits that cover her scar. “I did have a really good time designing,” Selena says. “The design I did, one of them, it was the high-waisted one with the belt. I’ve had a kidney transplant, and I like bathing suits that kind of cover where that’s been and make me feel comfortable.”

We applaud Gomez for continuing to be open about her health issues, and that includes talking about her comfort level with showing off her scar. It’s empowering to display her scar, and it’s empowering to cover it up. The main takeaway is that Gomez has found a way to be comfortable in her skin and we applaud her for that. Also, that red is fierce.

This isn’t the first time Gomez has used a bathing suit to inspire a moment of self-empowerment. After Gomez shared pictures of herself in a bikini last year following her kidney surgery, trolls criticized the singer’s body. She cheated death, but yeah, let’s focus on the extra five pounds.

Gomez hit back on social media with a powerful quote by Naomi Wolf, writing “The beauty myth- an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty. I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone. Wind in her sails.”

To recap, in the past week Gomez has launched a limited-edition line of bathing suits and hung out with Oprah Winfrey. That’s some mighty fine wind in her sails.

Yesterday at the @hollywoodreporter Empowerment in Entertainment event, I had the honor to meet some of the brightest students who might never have imagined a career in Hollywood as they were given the opportunity to go to college and work with mentors in the industry. Thank you to the most courageous, brave, intellectual, strong, beautiful spirit that is Oprah for caring so much about empowering all walks of life but more importantly for being the action and not just standing behind the word. You DO it. Thank you for continually inspiring us to be kinder, greater and stretching all the boundaries for the better. “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required.”
