Selena Gomez is feeling single AF at the moment. The popstar just dropped her third studio album Rare and is earning praise from critics and fans alike, but Gomez recently revealed that she still wishes she had a special someone to share her life and success with behind the scenes.Gomez was interviewed by Apple’s new Genius YouTube series Verified and explained the inspiration behind her lead single and title track “Rare.” Going line by line through the self-empowerment anthem, Gomez said that while the song is about valuing your own self-worth in a relationship and not staying with a person who doesn’t see you as ‘rare,’ she still struggles with being single. “Some days when I wake up and I’m annoyed, I’m like, I’m going to be alone forever,” said Gomez. “After that 15 minutes goes away, I say to myself, I know that there’s someone for everybody.”On her decision to write and release “Rare,” Gomez said that the song’s message was one that she was scared to sing in the past. “I didn’t want to sound like a bitch,” said Gomez, who was worried the song would come off as braggadocious. “I know that’s not the case and that’s just where my mind goes to.”While most listeners would have no qualms identifying Gomez as rare, the actor, singer, producer and now beauty line owner says that seeing herself as someone worthy of love and respect isn’t always easy. “Self-esteem and confidence is a constant struggle for me,” said Gomez. “It’s getting better with time and age but it will always be something that I’m working on. I think recently this is the most I’ve been vocal about, actually I deserve this and I have a right to claim this and I have a right to put out things that I want to put out and talk about things that I want to talk about.”
Speaking about the line “I’m not gonna beg for you / I’m not gonna let you make me cry,” Gomez said that it was inspired by past relationships where causing pain and using behaviour that was manipulative was intentional. “I’ve heard and I’ve experienced and whatnot, I think men and women do it, especially teenagers and young people in love, is there’s the satisfaction out of hurting someone because you know that they care. Purposefully putting someone down because you want to keep them,” said Gomez. “I’ve had someone actually say that to me before. To keep that person down so they never realize, ‘Oh, I’m strong enough to actually get out of this situation.'”Gomez first began working on “Rare” four years ago while she was still promoting her 2015 album Revival and said that she hopes the new song speaks to her fans. The actor said that connecting with her fans continues to be one of the most important things in her life, but admitted she’s been forced to step back from interacting with her 170 million Instagram followers in order to protect her own mental and emotional well-being. “I think people expect a lot more of me and want me to do more, but the truth is that I have to take care of myself and take care of my mind and the things that I’m reading and listening to,” said Gomez. “But I knew that hopefully this would be a body of work that people can relate to and walk through life with.”
