You may know his face from an Olympic podium, but what does ice skating Champion Elvis Stojko like to do in his down time? Find out now with these seven fun facts that you didn’t know about the Canadian legend.

He’s a master of martial arts

Enrolled in karate when he was 10 by his father, Stojko was a natural at the sport and became a black belt by the time he was 16. He even competed in the 2005 WKA Canadian Championships and placed 1st in the Chinese martial arts division, going on to win the silver medal at the World Championships with his life-long coach Glen Doyle by his side.

He’s married to Mexican figure skater Gladys Orozco

On June 20th, 2010 Stojko married Mexican figure skater Gladys Orozco in Las Vegas, Nevada. They dated for more than a year before he popped the question, and they got married just four days later!

He’s competed in four Winter Olympic Games

At the 1991 World Championships, he became the first person to ever land a quadruple–double jump combination, and soared into the skating world. He finished 7th in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France and then went on to win silver just two years later at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. He won his first World championship that same year in Chiba, Japan, and another in 1995 in the UK. Three years later at the 1998 Nagano Olympics he won another silver medal despite suffering numerous injuries, and retired from competition after the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games where he placed eighth.

He’s the father of “three hairy daughters”

Three canine daughters, that is. He and his wife rescued three cattle dogs from Mexico named Sunna, Bestla and Isis who now live on their property in southern Ontario. They even have their own Instagram account!

He has a passion for motor sports

When he was 7 he got his first dirt bike, and he’s been racing to the finish ever since. While he loves ATVing, jet skiing and snowmobiling around his farm, he also races go-karts. He’s raced in the Rotax DD2 Masterclass in Canada and SKUSA Mexico series in the S1 and S4 classes.

He loves to take the stage

He made his acting debut in a production of Chicago, the Musical and went on to appear in the TV movie Ice Girls. He recently landed a role in Lee Foster’s The Use of Deadly Force.

He’s currently on The Thank You Canada Tour

This 29-stop tour was produced by ice dancing duo Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, and features many Canadian skating greats. For more information or to purchase tickets, check out The Thank You Canada Tour website.
