Shailene Woodley isn’t an Oscar contender yet, but she’s every bit the ingenue. She doesn’t mind fashion, but she’s not driven by it, and her beauty is almost 100 per cent natural. She’s a nouveau hippie with a Hollywood paycheque, but she doesn’t even have a house. She doesn’t, because she gave it away, choosing to be homeless and to live out of a carry-on bag.
She’s not like the young ladies who came before her, but that’s what makes her weird, charming and hard to figure out. Always keep them guessing, right?
It should come as no surprise that someone who doesn’t tow the party line is actually prone to idiosyncrasies. For example, she makes her own toothpaste and colours her eyes with spirulina. And if this were an out-of-the-blue thing, we’d be calling publicity stunt on this whole shebang, but she’s actually stuck to her guns and has amassed quite the beauty bible. Let’s take a look at what we know:
Shailene tells InStyle she mixes a safe clay, like bentonite or zeolite, with coconut water and one to two drops of good quality essential oils (she prefers peppermint or cinnamon). Instead of spitting out the paste, she sometimes swallows it “to get a dose of minerals.”
Her recipe to stave off the stink is simple: mix three tablespoons baking soda, one to three tablespoon coconut oil, one to two tablespoons arrowroot powder and a few drops of essential oil blends. If you’re curious about what she favours, Shailene tells InStyle it’s a combination of lavender, sage, pepper, tea tree and bergamot.
She uses beets – roasted beets, to be exact. She says, “Roast one for 30 to 50 minutes at 350 degrees, depending on the size of the beet. when cool, rub it on your lips.” She apparently eats them after, which you cannot do with normal lipstick. Food for thought. (You can also try pomegranates or cherries, which yes, will work, but isn’t staining your mouth with fruit normally what you’d be avoiding? At any rate, it sounds delicious.)
Just put oil in it, is basically Ms. Woodley’s approach. She says olive oil or coconut oil, and not too much. “I’ll put one tablespoon on my thick hair for a few minutes before bed and rinse out. It will leave your hair oily if you use too much, so start with small quantities to find out how much works best for your hair type,” she told InStyle.
This is where it begins to get quite impractical, but we will humour the Divergent star. She recommends using a greens powder like spirulina – the idea is, when it’s wet, you can apply it as a liner. We don’t think this could possibly last very long, but it’s pretty darn natural.
She told Into the Gloss that she uses Seabuckthorn Best Skin Ever from Canadian beauty brand Living Libations. “Everything is next-level, beyond pure,” she says. “They also make some amazing dark chocolate.”
For Teeth Whitening
She swishes with sesame oil to brighten her chompers. “It’s amazing! It really makes your teeth whiter, because the plaque on your teeth is not water soluble, it’s fat-soluble,” she tells Into the Gloss. “So the lipids have to dissolve in fats, which is why oil works in your mouth.”
For Eliminating Heavy Metals?
Shailene’s weird science: “I’ve discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn’t absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes. And, this is crazy: it also helps clean heavy metals out of your body.”
For your vagina
If you need a little pick-me-up, Shailene recommends giving your V some D. And not that kind of D – vitamin D! “If you’re feeling depleted, go in the sun for an hour and see how much energy you get,” she says. “Or, if you live in a place that has heavy winters, when the sun finally comes out, spread your legs and get some sunshine.”
