Shawn Mendes, 'GOT' and more nominated for People’s Choice Awards

In case you missed the memo, awards season has officially begun. TIFF events are unrolling across Toronto, the VMAs are still fresh in our minds, Oscar predictions are swirling around the Twittersphere and today the E! People’s Choice nominations were officially announced to eager fans.Whatever your preferred genre, we’ve been served up some seriously binge-worthy shows and movies this past year. Don’t even get us started on reality TV — aside from trying to keep up with the Kardashians, we had Bachelors jumping fences (for love), drag performances like you’ve never seen, reunions on the Jersey Shore boardwalk and some serious Stagecoach drama unfolding on Bachelor in Paradise. And that’s only the beginning…So, amongst all those memorable moments and characters, which shows, movies, songs and celebrities made the cut to round out this year’s official nominations?In the ‘Movie of 2019’ category, we see some obvious fan favourites: Toy Story 4, Captain Marvel, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, The Lion King, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, Us and Spider-Man: Far From Home. If you had nightmares of red jumpsuits, raspy voices and giant scissors after watching Jordan Peele’s Us in all it’s brilliant, twisted glory — you aren’t alone.Also, winter is coming… literally and figuratively, as Game of Thrones leads the pack with an impressive eight nominations. Jon Snow and Emilia Clarke can’t steal the entire show though, as Stranger Things and (Vancouver-filmed) Riverdale each boast seven nominations.'Reality Show of 2019' is sure to be a tight battle, with tried and true cult favourites like Keeping Up With the Kardashians, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Queer Eye, Bachelor in Paradise, Vanderpump Rules and Jersey Shore: Family Vacation (just to name a few) competing for top spot.

One of our favourite Canadian stars, Shawn Mendes, also got a nod — which comes as no surprise after his steamy VMAs performance with girlfriend Camila Cabello. Shawn, the people definitely love you, and we’re thrilled to see your Señorita is also recognized in the Female Artist of 2019 category alongside Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Cardi B., Halsey and Billie Eilish. Did someone say power couple? Yeah, we did.Good news, the Canadian nominees don’t end there. Schitt’s Creek was nominated for Best Comedy alongside The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, The Good Place and Orange Is the New Black. Dan Levy, who hilariously stars in the show opposite his father, Eugene Levy and his sister, Sarah Levy, was quick to begin his Twitter campaign.

The awards cover a total of 43 categories, expanding beyond movies, TV and music to include beauty influencers, social stars and, yes, even the ‘Most Hype Worthy Canadian of 2019’ which pits Celine Dion, Sandra Oh, Drag Race star Brooke Lynn Hytes, Shawn Mendes, Drake, Raptors superfan Nav Bhatia, Keanu Reeves and Cobie Smulders against each other. Last year's honours went to Tessa and Scott, who won over familiar contenders Shawn, Sandra, Drake and Ryan Reynolds.For the full list of nominees, click here, and don’t forget to cast your votes online.
