Shawn Mendes drew the ire of some of his loyal fans when he sidestepped a question about his recent Camila Cabello collaboration “Señorita.” The Canadian singer was wrapping up his Q&A session with fans before his Tampa concert on Saturday when a fan asked Mendes about the inspiration behind the new duet. Smiling, Mendes replied “I love you guys, have a great time,” before dashing off the stage.
While it appears to us that Mendes’ non-answer was his answer, with the popstar very likely aware that all his fans have seen pictures of him kissing longtime friend Camila Cabello, some fans were not impressed with his hasty exit.
Q: What inspired you to write Señorita?

A handful of fans tweeted Mendes, with user @SalmaSoea writing “Just imagine spending a lot of money to ask him a question, waiting till your turn and that he just ignores you.” Twitter user @mfcesa2002 added “People spend their hard-earned money to attend his Q&As, and he doesn’t even answer questions about his damn job?! This is pure madness. The purpose of the Q&A is to give the opportunity to the fans to ask him about his music, and now he refuses to answer. I am disappointed. Sry.”
We get that fans would be disappointed that Mendes abruptly left the Q&A, but according to Mendes, the query about “Señorita” had previously been announced as the final question of the event, so his quick exit seemed more tongue-in-cheek than a slight to his fans. In a now deleted tweet captured by Cosmopolitan, Mendes responded to fans, writing “Hey! There was no bad intention here. If you were there, you would have known it was the last question & that’s why I decided to turn it into a lighthearted funny goodbye! Sorry if that upset anyone, I adore you guys! No need for any negativity ❤️.” Mendes followed up with a second tweet, writing “I love you guys!!!” but we’re still a bit confused as to why Mendes would delete the first tweet.
Cabello and Mendes had been spotted in Tampa earlier that day, hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Cabello was later caught on camera living her best life at Shawn’s concert in her native Miami, with the pop singer dancing and posing for pictures with fans during the show.
The pair dropped the track “Senorita” earlier this summer, their first duet since 2015’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and quickly kicked off dating rumours thanks to the sexy video and numerous PDA sessions caught by paparazzi. Shawn may not have answered the question about what inspired “Senorita,” but we can tell you. They like each other. That’s it!
