Shawn Mendes has a new tattoo, and this one is extra special because it was inspired by a fan.

Last week, a fan Photoshopped a butterfly tattoo—designed by a popular, mega-talented tattoo artist—onto a picture of Mendes and posted it to Twitter for her followers and fellow stans to see.

To her surprise, it was noticed by Shawn himself: “Wait this is awesome,” Mendes replied to her tweet.”“Can you DM the drawing?”

Then, he slid into the fan’s DMs and a super sweet (and now hilariously viral) exchange ensued.

Kayla, who goes by the Twitter handle @nasaruins, eventually returned home from the car wash and sent the Grammy-nominated heartthrob a photo of the design. A few days later, Mendes actually got the tattoo in the exact place she suggested. His tattoo artist Livia Tsang (who is also behind the guitar tat on Shawn’s forearm and the light bulb on his bicep) inked the singer and shared some adorable post-tat pictures on social media.

And the butterfly art nicely fits into Shawn’s tattoo collection. Like the guitar that incorporates trees, the Toronto skyline and a sound wave of his parents saying “I love you,” most of his pieces are highly detailed, finely drawn and packed full of meaning. The light bulb filled with flowers, for example, was a nod to his second album—and his mom. “I wanted something to represent Illuminate which is obviously the light bulb,” he explained at a fan Q&A. “The flowers are lilies and orchids which are my mom’s favourite flowers.”

He also loves to emphasis elements of nature, especially animals—as seen in the swallow on his hand and the elephant on his finger.

The way this tattoo blends butterfly imagery with a floral design even has some fans speculating it might hold significance to his rumored relationship with Camila Cabello. According to one theory, the proof is in their album artwork: the wing side of the butterfly represents Camila and the butterfly theme that ran through her debut era, while the floral side of the butterfly represents Shawn and the signature flower design that appears on his merch and the cover of his latest record.

To say Kayla is shook to have been acknowledged by her fave is an understatement. “No words,” she tweeted. “Who would’ve thought that me messing around and editing a tattoo onto him would turn into a reality?”

It seems that Shawn’s connection to the Mendes Army is forever—just like his new tattoo.
