This season on The Simpsons, Mr. Burns will officially become the last Springfieldite (Springfielder? Springfieldian?) to learn that loyal assistant Waylon Smithers is gay.

After 27 seasons of watching our favourite bespectacled animated henchman pining after his pruny boss, we will finally get to witness Smithers coming out to Mr. Burns. And it’s reportedly going to happen over the course of two special episodes that will document his journey to self-acceptance.

“In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t,” explains Simpsons Executive Producer Al Jean. “We deal with that in two episodes. We actually do a lot with Smithers this year. He gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”

Hopefully Mr. Burns doesn’t lose the man who has always been there for him. We’re proud of you Smithers!smithers_burns
