Scarlett Johansson has always kept her personal life tight. There are no pap walks, she doesn’t call the press to give them a heads-up on where she’ll be, she works her ass off, promotes her movies, and if she happens to get photographed on her way to dinner or strolling down the street, there is no smile or wave or any sort of acknowledgment. It’s like the cameras aren’t even there. She’s always been consistent that way and we appreciate that.

And Johansson, who’s been married twice (to Ryan Reynolds and Romain Dauriac) and is currently dating SNLer Colin Jost, almost never talks about the guys she’s been with. Funnily enough, though, what she will discuss is that if and when she does embark on a new relationship, it’s because she wants to — not because it’s some twisted set-up. Because she’s ScarJo, and she can date whomever she wants — on her terms.

A former Scientologist recently claimed that, back in the day, Scar was called in to try out for the position of Tom Cruise‘s girlfriend. And Johansson wants no part of this story.

“The very idea of any person auditioning to be in a relationship is so demeaning,” the actress said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “I refuse for anyone to spread the idea that I lack the integrity to choose my own relationships. Only a man, aka Brendan Tighe, would come up with a crazy story like that.”

Tighe, who used to be a member of Cruise’s security unit, was on Megyn Kelly Today on Wednesday where he spoke about his access to reports of women who allegedly auditioned to be in a relationship with the actor. Johansson’s name was allegedly on that infamous list.

“Another actress, [Scientologist] Erika Christensen, had to disconnect from Scarlett Johansson because it didn’t go well,” Tighe added. “That was in that report.”

A Church of Scientology spokeswoman denied Tighe’s allegations in a statement to THR, saying, “Brendan Tighe was a Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization security guard/night watchman from 2002 to 2009. The ‘access’ he boasts of having was largely limited to viewing security cameras from a guard booth. He was removed from that position for dereliction of duty.”

Hmm, OK, but Scarlett’s denial is a little … charged, no? We’ve heard for years that she was on the list, she’s never said anything about it before but she chose now to speak up about it? We get it, we wouldn’t want to be dragged into the Scientology mud but she could’ve just let this go, like she does with everything else, and simply could’ve kept quiet. Instead, it raises more questions.

Tighe was there from 2002 to 2009 so we now have a timeline. This would’ve been post-Nicole, pre-Katie, and Scarlett would’ve been anywhere from 18 to 21 at the time. Scar may very well be telling the truth, of course. But it also wouldn’t be super-surprising if she had gone on a disastrous date with Tom, but didn’t know it was an audition to be his girlfriend/eventual wife.

Whatever the case, though, could there be two more opposite humans? Sure, from afar, Scar is totally Tom’s type: young, successful, beautiful. That’s the kind of image Cruise’s people want for their guy. But Tom’s all business, and whatever’s left is for Sci. Scarlett might be a professional but her life is much more rounded out. Johansson’s also too strong, too pragmatic and too opinionated; Tom — and Sci — wouldn’t have stood a chance against her. Think it’s safe to say it worked out for the best — for everyone.
