For a couple that has been through so much together — a clandestine marriage, the brutal death of a baby, a tough divorce, the most harrowing birth in history — Jackson Avery and April Kepner sure are having a hard time nailing this friendship thing.

When Grey’s Anatomy returns on Thursday night after a long holiday hiatus, it seems like they’re both still willing to give it a shot though. At least that’s the sense we got after watching Jackson usher April out on her Tinder date while he enjoyed a giant plate of nachos on their joint sofa.

So we couldn’t help but ask the actors who play these characters, Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew, whether they thought it’s actually possible to be friends with an ex.

“I don’t know if it’s possible for exes to really be friends. I have no experience with that,” Drew says. “I married my, like, college sweetheart right out of college.”

“She has no exes,” Williams adds. “I do, and I’m not friends with any of them.”

The actor explains that he doesn’t necessarily think you can’t be friends with an ex in all cases, just his. He also clarifies that any future platonic friendships with an ex can depend on how long you were with the person before breaking up. In the case of Jackson and April however, throwing a kid into the mix certainly adds a whole new complex layer to consider. It’s a layer that both the actors have thought at length about, it seems.

“It’s one thing to get back with or spend time with the other adult by choice; it’s another thing to be kind of forced into doing it because there’s a child in the middle,” Williams says. “That can, over time, rewarm things, or it can further highlight that you really would not be around this person at all if you didn’t have to be. It’s a little unorthodox because Jackson and April live together even though they’re divorced with a kid. So, that’s a little odd, and we’ve been trying to figure out what that means.”

“We have moments where we’re, like, ‘Now, who are you to me right now?'” Drew laughs. “How am I supposed to feel about you right now in this scene because I’m confused.”

The duo obviously remained pretty tight-lipped about whether this new “dating other people while living together situation” will rekindle the Japril romance in the near future, but it sounds as though we shouldn’t give up all hope just yet.

“There’s this little child that they’re both completely in love with,” Drew adds. “And when they look at their child, they also see this person that they used to be in love with… might still be in love with… or are very confused about.”

Well colour us confused too. Confused but also hopeful… because ever since Derek Shepherd died, we’ve needed a good couple to root for. And Jacks and April just so happen to be it.
