It’s a good time to be Karine Vanasse. The French-Canadian actress has been carving out a path for herself on the small screen for years now, with notable international roles on series like Pan Am and Revenge, and on acclaimed films like Polytechnique and Emporte-Moi. Lately though, it’s her role as Lise Delorme on the award-winning CTV limited series Cardinal that’s really catapulted her into the spotlight. (See her first Canadian Screen Award win.)

The fact that the actress gets to work on such a renowned show here in Canada isn’t lost on her. She’s a proud supporter of the MADE campaign—an initiative celebrating homegrown talent here and abroad in a bid to transform the way the world sees CanCon.

“Let’s just remind ourselves of all the talent we have here, and let’s be proud of it,” Vanasse, who is also the voice behind the campaign’s French promo, told etalk.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Here are five other reasons Vanasse is positively killing it right now.

The world is falling for Cardinal

The dark drama, based on the Giles Blunt-penned John Cardinal series of novels, isn’t just a success in Canada. Production is well under way in Northern Ontario for the series’ fourth season and the show’s capacity for creating water cooler conversations has expanded its reach to include the U.K., Scandinavia, Spain, Australia and Germany, where the show is broadcast internationally.

Vanasse’s role as the French-Canadian detective Lise Delorme has also been critically-applauded, but for the actress it’s extra-special to be able to play that rare Canadian unicorn.

“I was always wishing I would be lucky enough to play a French-speaking character on an English Canadian show, and now it’s happening,” Vanasse said.

This week on #Cardinal the case started to heat up, and that means big things for Delorme.

She—and the show—are celebrating with some serious hardware

It was a proper sweep for Cardinal at the Canadian Screen Awards, when the show took home a whopping seven trophies in the limited series category, including top drama acting awards for Vanasse and her co-star, honourary Canadian Billy Campbell. Considering the duo’s tangible onscreen chemistry as professional partners on the show, the wins, and the show’s success, really come as no surprise.

“You’d have to be a cinder block not to have chemistry with Karine; she’s just about the most delightful person I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with,” Campbell said on the CSAs red carpet. “She’s a brilliant film actor. I didn’t have to do a damned thing to have chemistry with her. She’s a delight and really, really good. It was like a walk in the park.”

Merci ✨ ••• I said it last night, but what creates the magic between the audience and the characters on @cardinalctv is that the audience pays attention. You understand every subtle inflection in their tone, that small gesture that speaks louder than any word… and if at that specific moment you don’t exactly know what it means, at least you take notice and you keep that little piece of emotional information and you add it to the other ones. And then you get it. The real mystery to solve is there. In the complexity and richness of who they are. And you are the best detectives because you put the pieces together. I couldn’t be more grateful for that relationship. Thank you. ✨ @thecdnacademy. 📷 by @georgepimentel1

She’s got some serious (Twitter) #friendshipgoals

Vanasse doesn’t just talk the talk when it comes to Canadian film and TV—she also walks the walk. When she caught Jann Arden’s new CTV show Jann, she took to Twitter to share that she’s a proper Jann stan.

And then doubled-down on the love.

Yes, Arden heard and was keen to reciprocate and a social media love-in was born.

She’s doing all this as a new mom

The mom juggle is real—just ask any working matriarch. Vanasse seems to be handling it all with grace and beauty and is a true inspiration. She and her partner, Hugues Harvey, welcomed a baby last Easter and while the duo have kept their bundle of joy largely out of the spotlight, Vanasse has kept it real in interviews, saying that she’s relying on help in order to balance the personal and the professional. We applaud the honesty.

She’s a beauty brand ambassador, NBD

A successful TV show, a new mom, friends in high places, and the face of Canadian makeup company Marcelle. We don’t know how she does it, but it’s pretty clear that this busy lady is positively killing it in 2019.
