It’s the first of November, which means it’s officially acceptable to start getting excited for the holidays. The temperatures are cooling, the days are getting shorter and it’s time for Starbucks to unveil their new holiday cup.
In recent years, the coffee giant’s holiday design has become a hot item to debate. Some criticized the design for celebrating specific holidays more than others, while others criticized the cup for not taking a more firm stance on a Christmas design. In 2015, President Donald Trump even toyed with the idea of boycotting Starbucks after it abandoned its Christmas-themed holiday cups. You can’t please everyone.
Now it appears that Starbucks may have found the perfect middle ground, with their new holiday cup including a little something for all coffee drinkers.
Sketches of snowflakes, wrapped presents, lights, hearts, a Christmas tree and hands are illustrated on the cup. And once customers are done with their drink, the cup acts as a colouring book, allowing coffee lovers to customize it. It’s a brilliant way for Starbucks to capitalize on the recent trend of adult colouring books, while also appealing to all customers, regardless of whether they celebrate the holidays and which holidays they choose to celebrate.
A new video showing off the new holiday cup design was uploaded to YouTube today, with Starbucks advertising that “The holidays mean something different to everyone. This season the cup is just the beginning. How you make it special is up to you.”
Customers are also encouraged to share their own designs on social media, using the hashtag #GiveGood.
But, what will you put in your Starbucks holiday cup? In addition to the new design, the company also unveiled their latest holiday flavours today.
Past favourite holiday lattes — the peppermint mocha, caramel brûlé and eggnog flavours — are all returning to Starbucks this season along with a few new flavours: a chestnut praline tea latte and an American nuevo.
Time to start drinking and get colouring!
