Life hasn’t been easy for Haider the dog.

An Animal Aid Unlimited volunteer found the little guy on a street in India, ravaged by a disease called mange. It’s a skin condition that leaves its victims looking bare, chipped, dry and bleeding. The dog’s bones were also protruding from its body; it looked like the poor pooch’s days were numbered.

Given his sorry state, he was quickly captured and taken into the animal shelter. Here’s what he looked like when he first arrived:

Probably one of the saddest animals you’ve ever seen, right? Well, after being taken into the shelter, the dog received the first loving touch he’s had in what we can assume was a long time. A good meal and medicated baths to treat the mange soon followed. Slowly, the life started returning to Haider’s eyes:
