At the beginning of last night’s election results, the US was still full of possibilities and the belief that Hillary Clinton would cinch her projected win. Of course, we now know that’s not what happened, with the world waking up to a victory by President Donald Trump.
While many Americans, and the rest of the world, are still asking how we got here, one person knows. Comedian and political commentator Stephen Colbert opened his election night special with the retelling of the rise of President Donald Trump in the animated short Trump Begins: The Dawn of the Donald.
The short film begins in 2011 at the White House Correspondents Dinner, with President Barack Obama joking about Trump’s reality series, The Apprentice. Cartoon Donald then goes even further back in time to his childhood, where his fear of losing is instilled in him by his father, Fred Trump. Jokes about Trump’s small hands and orange skin are sprinkled throughout the funny, but slightly too close to home video. This would be much more relaxing to watch if Trump hadn’t won.
The video closes with President Obama and First Lady Michelle sitting on the couch watching one of Donald Trump’s political speeches, with the POTUS uttering the same words many third-party voters are saying today. “My bad.”
Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Democracy’s Series Finale: Who’s Going To Clean Up This Shit? will be available on CraveTV starting Thursday, November 10.
