Ladies, it’s time for us to talk about your workout. No, we don’t mean how many crunches you’re doing a day or how long you’re running. We’re talking about the very basics of your workout. We’re actually saying that you might not need to be running at all (gasp!).

How often does it feel like hitting the gym is a chore you need to get done rather than an enjoyable activity? And how often do you skip it all together because your motivation has drastically decreased since that one time you had a smoothie and then vowed to work out six days a week? Don’t get down on yourself. Seriously, it happens to the best of us. But the problem might not be you… it’s probably your workout.

Recent studies show that for a lot of women, fitness motivation is significantly higher when you get your exercise from group, dance-based classes rather than solo sessions in the gym. When your workout is dance, the only motivation you need is to want to have fun and hang out with your friends. And if you ask us, we pretty much always have that.

You don’t need a punishing workout to try to beat your body into shape (what shape even is that?). We’re out here to have a good time and stay healthy and active. So, what are these fantastic cardio dance parties we’re talking about? Here are a few of our favourites.

Zumba

Okay, first of all, how much fun is it to say Zumba? It just sounds like a good time. Zumba is based on Latin American dance moves and is set to fast-paced, heart-pumping music. You’re really going to learn to get those hips moving, and you honestly might sweat straight through your sports bra. You can’t beat the kind of energy Zumba instructors have, though. We’re dancing around in our seats just thinking about it.

Samba

This is that dance they do in Brazil with feathers crowns at Carnival. You might have to settle for doing it in leggings at the gym, but that doesn’t make it any less fun (well maybe a little). It’s a similar idea to Zumba, but with even more hip action if that’s possible. They also tend to stick to the traditional music while Zumba now uses any high-tempo beat. This is a class you’re definitely going to want to hit up multiple times a week.

BodyBlast

While not technically a dance exercise class, BodyBlast is fast-paced and they’ll often have music playing to pump you up. This is cardio and circuit training, which is one of the best ways to get a varied workout and trick yourself into doing more reps. Great for sculpting arms, butt and core as well as getting in that cardio. Plus, if you feel like you’re dying, don’t worry, everyone else does too. We’re all in this together.

Cardiolates

It sounds fake, but check this out. It’s everything you love about a group dance class workout, but on a trampoline. Yeah, that’s right. It was developed by former Rockettes about a decade ago, and it’s gaining popularity in North America rapidly. Rebounding (bouncing on the trampoline) makes the workout lower impact on your hips and knees, but let’s face it, we’re all here just to jump around. That looks like a blast.

So next time you’re just not feeling it at the gym, maybe skip the boring routine altogether and opt for a high-energy, community-forming, dance party workout. You might just end up loving it.
