We all know you don’t have to be young and pretty to enjoy a good romp in the sack. It’s just fun, and, y’know, love and all that stuff. Well, according to science, it’s actually good for you to continue your sexual habits well into old age. As though we needed a scientific reason to keep up our “boudoir habits.”
Turns out that aside from the clear physical and emotional benefits that sex can bring, a new study also says that it might help keep our minds sharp as we age. It’s certainly a lot more fun than some of those “brain games” out there.
According to researchers from U.K.’s Coventry, while hormones may affect male and female brains differently as they age, early results indicate that all participants had a higher cognitive function after having sex. While the women from the study saw a higher word recall following coitus, the men had both a higher word recall as well as number sequencing. It’s unclear as yet why there would be a different response between men and women, as the study wasn’t focused on how each gender cognitively responded to intercourse.
For the study, co-authors Hayley Wright and Rebecca Jenks looked at 6,800 adults aged 50-89 years old. They only tested once per adult, so more “research” is necessary, but we don’t think anyone will mind.
As it stands, they’re not a hundred per cent sure if the relation between sex and smarts is correlative or causative — do sexually active older people happen to have sharper minds, or are sharper minds a result of sex? Either way the message for now is clear: keep going, cowboys and cowgirls. There are many benefits to sex that we still haven’t discovered yet.
