There are many things that can distract a bride on her big day: nerves, in-laws, nervous in-laws, or the wedding photographer more concerned with drinking champagne than he is with taking photos, to name a few. But the biggest distraction for this young Tennessee bride came in the form of a telephone call, informing her that her father and grandparents had been in a car accident on the highway.

Being a paramedic by trade, Sarah Ray did what she was trained to do and hopped in the car with her now-husband (also a paramedic), and rushed to the scene. No big deal. The wedding could wait — and it did. Luckily, the accident happened after the ceremony and before the reception. And even more luckily, all three victims ended up being OK.

The photo of Ray striding down the highway through the rain, her wedding dress hiked up to her knees, was taken by her mother, and is a rare combination of beautiful and badass.

Ray insists she’s not a hero and was just doing what any other paramedic in her situation would do…which sounds exactly like something a hero would say.
