Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are shaping up to be quite the on-screen power couple, similar to Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. They first showed off their amazing chemistry in Crazy, Stupid, Love, then reunited (to our delight) for Gangster Squad. Now they’re coming at us with a third installment of their on-screen love affair, with La La Land. The trailer doesn’t show us much, but the whole film looks like an old-timey musical and we are so on board. But that’s not even the best part.
We’ll give you a hint: it has something to do with the singer in the trailer. To whom does that angelic voice belong? Could it be John Legend (who also stars in the film)? Could it be some other highly-trained vocalist who lent his voice to the song? No, friends. That is the voice of none other than Mr. Ryan Thomas Gosling. We’re going to let that sink in.
It makes sense that with a perfect face comes perfect vocal chords, we just hadn’t had an opportunity to hear that beautiful voice in song before. Boy, was the world missing out! Is there anything this man can’t do? Seriously, it’s not fair that Eva Mendes gets this guy all to herself.
La La Land is a musical, so it looks like we’re going to have at least two hours of opportunity to hear that heavenly voice. As you can probably tell from the trailer, the film is a love story between Gosling and Stone’s characters and has a Moulin Rouge-like romantic quality to it. Stone plays Mia, an aspiring actress trying to make it in Hollywood, who falls for Gosling’s Sebastian, a struggling jazz musician. As the two become successful, the pressure of fame puts a strain on their relationship. Other notable cast include: Legend, J.K. Simmons and Finn Wittrock (Unbroken).
The movie just looks like it’s going to be amazing. The love story looks adorable (we love the Gosling-Stone chemistry) and it looks like it’s packed with cute musical numbers (check out Stone dancing in the street with her friends in the trailer). We just hope it all ends well. Our poor hearts can’t handle another beautiful tragic love story.
The movie doesn’t come out until December 16th, but to tide you over until then you can buy Gosling’s single from the movie, ‘City of Stars,’ on iTunes now.
