It was a Girl-Power-Boy-Band-Blast-From-The-Past kind of night at the Billboard Music Awards Wednesday and we’re still reeling from the incredible displays of human talent that bombarded our eyes. The Old Taylor Swift could come to the phone and delivered a performance that had us back in our Sparks Fly feels; Mariah Carey did her a musical tribute to herself; Madonna was in the building; Kelly Clarkson smashed the vocals and her comedy set and the Jonas Brothers made their much-anticipated return to the global stage. On top of all that, new talent also came to slay in the form of the world’s hottest boy band, BTS.

If that sounds like a killer time, here’s everything else that went down at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards:

Sparks Flew and we were Panic!ing

We knew Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie were opening the BBMAs with their first live performance of “ME!” but we still weren’t prepared for that performance. The Old Taylor was back and we didn’t realize how much we missed her. She’s got all the production value of Reputation Taylor with all the pastels of Sparks Fly Taylor and we are loving it.

Maybe it was a little too familiar…

Considering the performance was heavily influenced by the “ME!” music video, it makes sense that Tay brought out a full marching band (and honestly, we heart). But some viewers noticed that the visual was a lot like another performance—Beychella.

Things got a little heated online but let’s all remember: these are two incredibly talented women killing it in the music industry so let them live.

Kelly was the hostess with the mostess

Kelly Clarkson reprised her role as the Billboard Music Awards host who does. it. all. She not only came with the jokes throughout the night, but kicked the whole thing off with a medley of the most popular hits from the past year. This woman is everything.

Imagining a better world

Imagine Dragons won the BBMA for Top Rock Artist and the band used its platform to draw attention to LGBTQ+ rights, discrimination and persecution in the United States. Lead singer Dan Reynolds called attention to the fact that gay conversion therapy is still legal in 34 states.

“This can change, but it’s going to take all of us talking to our state legislation and pushing forward laws to protect our LGBTQ youth,” he said.

Audience reaction were on-point

We’re always very pleased when celeb audience reactions are captured and the BBMAs did not disappoint. Here are some of our favourites:

Taylor screaming ‘We love you’ to Mariah Carey.

And OF COURSE the moment Priyanka Chopra stole a kiss from hubby Nick Jonas—while he was performing.

Drake remembers where he came from

Drake came through Wednesday, winning enough awards (12) to solidify him as the artist with the most Billboard Music Awards EVER at 27 wins total. He didn’t forget his roots though, thanking his mom and Degrassi, and giving a shout-out to Arya Stark for “putting in the work” last Sunday on Game of Thrones (is that still a spoiler at this point?).

Paula’s hat fling

Paula Abdul made a triumphant, and impressive, return to the global stage Wednesday but she nearly took out Julianne Hough in the process. Julianne was totally cool with it though. Honestly, it would be an honour to get annihilated by Paula during a performance. We volunteer for the next one!

The Jo Bros are nice, but have you seen their wives?

The Jonas Brothers blew us away with the medley we’ve all been waiting for featuring not only Jo Bros originals, but “Jealous”  from Nick’s solo career and “Cake by the Ocean” from Joe’s stint with DNCE. While we were all pumped to see our teen crushes killing it onstage once again, it was their wives who ended up stealing the show. Who stans the Jonas Sisters??

Yes, we mean “wives”

Oh did you think we made a mistake there calling Sophie Turner Joe Jonas’s “wife”? NAH! Joe and Sophie tied the knot immediately after the show and we’re dyyyingggg. Joe + Sophie 5ever!!

Congrats you two! We’re sobbing because of reasons.

Terry (and everyone else) loves BTS

BTS kept that boy band energy pumping with their performance (and honestly, just their presence). The Jo Bros are great (and vital to our childhoods) but BTS is the biggest boy band in the world right now for a reason. Also, Terry Crews might be their biggest fan.

Madonna performed with… Madonna?

Madonna debuted her new song with Maluma Wednesday, and brought out some special guests for her performance… herself. The show included multiple shape-shifting holograms of the singer. You need to see it to really get it.

Mariaaah

Mariah Carey did probably the most Mariah thing ever when she performed her own medley in honour of herself when accepting her Billboard Music Icon Award. Not that we’re complaining. She’s Mariah, all critiques are invalid.
