When Calgarians started sharing photos of a strange streak of fiery light in the sky earlier this week, we all thought one thing:

Now, experts at the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada have put the mystery to rest and are shattering our “Calgalien” dreams. The astronomers are claiming that the streak isn’t in fact of alien origin (nor the tail of a falling meteor, as others have claimed). Instead, they say it’s probably just a boring old aircraft contrail that came out of a WestJet flight. Yawn, right?

But, then…how do they explain the strange glow the trail emitted? Or the fact that it majestically flowed through the air without a care in the world (according to eye-witnesses, of course)? Well, said experts told CTV News that a well-timed setting sun and a turbulent airflow were to blame.

Ugh. Way to burst our bubble, Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
