We have a Mother’s Day gift for you. You’re going to love it, but you’ll have to wait a few months for the whole package.
We predict that Ricki and the Flash directed by Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) and written by Diablo Cody (Juno) is going to be your summertime favourite. Based on the life of Cody’s own mother-in-law, the movie stars Meryl Streep. We could just stop there and you’d know it’s going to be a good movie. But there’s more.
Streep is beyond convincing as a rocker who tries to make things right with her family after choosing music over them (and yes, she sings her own songs, of course!). And we’re in love with the cast of co-stars, particularly Mamie Gummer (Streep’s real-life daughter, who you may already know and love from her scene-stealing ways on The Good Wife), Kevin Kline, Audra McDonald and Sebastian Stan. But we have to admit, what’s really got us hooked is Rick Springfield as Streep’s love interest. Dr. Noah Drake? “Jessie’s Girl”? Say it out loud: “Streep/Springfield duet.” We die.
With lines like “Sometimes a kid just needs a mother” and “It really doesn’t matter if your kids love you or not. It’s not their job to love you, it’s your job to love them,” it’s a shame
you can’t open it it’s not opening in time for Mother’s Day but its trailer will hold us over nicely. Is it August 7 yet?
