You read that headline correctly. Kanye West is now a doctor…or at least an honourary Ph.D thanks to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Yesterday was wonderful day for ‘Ye. Not only did he receive a doctoral degree for his contributions to music, fashion and pop culture (the first artist to ever receive the honour) from the art school, he also smiled. A lot! Kim must be so proud.
After receiving his degree, the school invited Kanye to give a speech to his fellow graduates which was surprisingly humble, gracious and full of jokes.
“I felt my nerves a bit, and I don’t feel that feeling a lot.”
“I felt my nerves a bit, and I don’t feel that feeling a lot,” said an uncharacteristically emotional Yeezy. “The nerves of humility and modesty when being honoured.”
While describing his contributions to art, Kanye explained to his fellow graduates, “I am a pop artist. So my medium is public opinion and the world is my canvas.” He followed that up with a funny quip referencing his old beef with former President George W. Bush saying, “George Bush … has some very cool self-portraits.”
Kanye also gave some advice we all can benefit from. “‘I’m sorry’ is something that you can use a lot. It gives you the opportunity to give your opinion, apologize for it, and give your opinion again. You should not be sorry for your opinions!”
Listen to the highlights from Dr. West’s terrific graduation speech below. Isn’t it nice to see this side of Kanye?
