For fans of Toronto sports, it’s been a rough quarter-century. No wonder the entirety of Canada is celebrating the Toronto Raptors’ FIRST EVER trip to the NBA Finals! To put it into perspective: the last time a Toronto pro sports team made it to ANY major finals was in 1993 when the Maple Leafs and Blue Jays both won their respective championships. In the words of Jennifer Garner: “That’s one Ariana Grande ago!”

The Raps took Game Six (after the longest 7.9 seconds in Canadian history) on May 25 against the Milwaukee Bucks to win the Easter Conference and advance to the finals to face the Golden State Warriors. It was a tight, hard-fought game and there were several moments Drake looked like he was going into cardiac arrest, but we did it, baby!

Yeah, we Canadians are pretty pumped about it. Especially Drake who, as the Raptors Ambassador, was totally aware of his own meme status.

While Drake is definitely the most popular face of the Raptors, there were a lot of fans bowing down (literally) to the Raps’ most significant addition to the team/the most low-key player in the NBA—Sir Kawhi Leonard. All hail the King of the North!

Saturday night was effectively a Canada-wide block party.

Savour this moment, Canada. The Raptors will face the Warriors in Game One of the NBA Finals on Thursday in Toronto.
