When you think of awesome places to work, you probably think of jobs with giant office spaces, high salaries, lots of vacation time and a reasonable workload. Maybe they have bean bag chairs, standing desks, iced coffee kegs and free iced tea.

Unfortunately, that’s probably not what you would get if you worked at what is being called the best employer in Canada. Glassdoor just released its annual list of the best places to work in the country, but unlike similar lists you might’ve already seen, the winners here are chosen by the actual employees of the companies being judged.

Just like Trip Advisor, Glassdoor allows employees to review their own companies with a rating and comment system. At the end of the year, those ratings are tallied and a winner is declared.

This year’s No.1 workplace? Earls Kitchen + Bar. That’s right, a restaurant. One of the most notoriously horrible places to work. Not only do you have to deal with a sub-minimum “server’s wage”, you also have to contend with long hours, hot kitchens, angry chefs and so many demanding customers.

So how did this restaurant chain manage to claim the top spot? Glassdoor put a whole video together to answer that question.

To sum it up, though, many employees seem to feel as though the management at Earls has a genuine interest in both their success and future. Some of the restaurant staff mentioned how managers hold regular meetings with them to discuss long-term goals and ambitions.

The employees are also directly connected with the success of the company, in the sense that they receive weekly reports showing how their restaurant is performing. As for the chefs, they’re kept happy because the restaurant is constantly experimenting with new ways to cook and prepare dishes, which keeps the creative juices flowing and the job interesting, rather than churning out the same old menu items every night.

Tailing just behind Earls are Apple, Lululemon, Royal Bank of Canada and Manulife. You can check out Glassdoor’s entire list right here.

Now get applying! This could be a great way to start off 2016.
