You might think that a 24-year-old and a 22-year-old can’t possibly be experts in love and marriage and you’d be totally right.

But if we learned anything from Hailey and Justin Bieber’s new interview in Vogue (we actually learned 16 things!), it’s that the young newlyweds would be the first to tell you they don’t know what they’re doing, but they’re willing to work at it until they do.

The main takeaway from the interview is that not only are these two CRAZY about each other, they have no illusions when it comes to the difficulties of marriage and spending “forever” together. Their quick union may have been interpreted by some as a way to fast-track to sex (something the Biebers admit they saved for after their vows) but they are adamant they’re in it for the long haul.

And that’s just a fraction of what we learned from the interview. Read on to see all the little tidbits the Biebers dropped about Justin’s past, how they reconnected and the adorable nickname Mr. Bieber has for the Mrs.

1. Hailey actually takes marriage really seriously

Hailey knows they're young to already be married, but she wants people to understand that she didn’t take the decision lightly.

“I prayed to feel peace about the decision, and that’s where I landed,” she said in the interview. “I love him very much. I have loved him for a long time.”

“It’s just that I’m fighting to do this the right way, to build a healthy relationship,” she added. “I want people to know that... We’re two young people who are learning as we go. I’m not going to sit here and lie and say it’s all a magical fantasy. It’s always going to be hard. It’s a choice.”

Justin, too, was sure Hailey was the one.

“When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life,” he said. “I was like, holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.”

2. Justin had been celibate for more than a year before he and Hailey got back together

As part of a total personality detox after years of partying and drug-use, Justin had decided to practice celibacy. He saw it as a way to fight his addictions and to get closer to God.

“[God] doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff. He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain,” Justin shared. “I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behavior.”

3. They go to marriage counselling

The Biebers shared that they attend marriage counselling to streamline their communication and practice expressing themselves in constructive ways.

“The thing is, marriage is very hard,” Hailey said. “That is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.”

“It’s been so hard for me to trust people. I’ve struggled with the feeling that people are using me or aren’t really there for me,” Justin added.

“One of the big things for me is trusting myself. I’ve made some bad decisions personally, and in relationships. Those mistakes have affected my confidence in my judgment. It’s been difficult for me even to trust Hailey. We’ve been working through stuff. And it’s great, right?”

4. Justin’s pet name for Hailey is “baby boo”

A few times in the interview, JB refers to HB as “baby boo.” It’s not the most original nickname in the world, but it’s pretty adorable.

5. Their first attempt at dating did NOT end well

It’s well-known Bieber lore that Hailey and Justin dated briefly three years ago. They couple alluded to the fact that there may have been some infidelity involved.

“Negative things happened that we still need to talk about and work through,” Hailey shared. “Fizzled would not be the right word—it was more like a very dramatic excommunication. There was a period where if I walked into a room, he would walk out.”

6. Hailey has never been a “Belieber”

It’s been widely reported that Hailey was a MAJOR Bieber fan before the two dated. She wants people to understand that while she liked him, she wouldn’t call herself a fangirl.

“I was never a superfan, of him or of anyone. It was never that crazed, screaming thing,” she said. “I didn’t think about it in any kind of way except for the fact that he was cute. Everybody had a crush on him. But for the first few years we had a weird age gap.”

7. Church has been the most important part of their relationship

Both times Hailey and Justin connected, it was after seeing each other at church. The first time was at a Hillsong satellite church in New York.

“One day Justin walked into Hillsong and was like, ‘Hey, you got older,’” Hailey recalled. “I was like, ‘Yeah, what’s up?’ Over time he became my best guy friend. I was running around with him as his homie, but we weren’t hanging out [romantically].”

When they reconnected last year, it was in a church in Miami at a conference hosted by the pastor who officiated Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding.

“The common denominator, I promise you, is always church. By then we were past the drama. I just gave him a hug,” Hailey said. “By the end of the conference, he was like, ‘We’re not going to be friends.’ I was like, ‘We’re not?’ ”

A month later, they were engaged.

8. Justin doesn’t consider himself “religious”

Despite the labels often attributed to him by the media, Justin wants people to understand that “religious” doesn’t quite define his feelings.

“I wouldn’t consider myself religious. That confuses a lot of people because they’re like, ‘Well, you go to church,’” he said. “I believe in the story of Jesus—that’s the simplicity of what I believe. But I don’t believe in all the religious elitism and pretentiousness, like people are better than you because they come to church… I get sensitive when religion comes up because it’s been so hurtful to a lot of people. I don’t want to be thought of as someone who stands for any of the injustice that religion has done and does do.”

9. Justin and Hailey’s personalities complement one another perfectly

The profile describes Justin as the id to Hailey’s superego; she’s the grounded one and he’s the wild card. They both talk about their personalities in complementary ways.

“He’ll say, ‘I feel,’ and I’ll say, ‘I think,’” Hailey says. “I have to really dive deep and struggle to be in touch with my emotions. He gets there immediately.”

“I’m the emotionally unstable one,” Justin counters. “I struggle with finding peace. I just feel like I care so much and I want things to be so good and I want people to like me. Hailey’s very logical and structured, which I need… I need one thing that’s certain. And that is my baby boo.”

10. Speaking of babies, she isn't pregnant

No, it wasn’t a shotgun wedding and Hailey confirms there won’t be any new additions to the Bieber household for a few years.

11. Justin isn’t working on any new music right now

A large portion of the interview was dedicated to discussing Justin’s past and his internal life. He admitted that he’s not currently working on new music, and is instead focussing on bettering himself.

“Just thinking about music stresses me out,” he said. “I’ve been successful since I was thirteen, so I didn’t really have a chance to find who I was apart from what I did. I just needed some time to evaluate myself: who I am, what I want out of my life, my relationships, who I want to be—stuff that when you’re so immersed in the music business you kind of lose sight of.”

12. Justin admits early fame made him arrogant

JB finally answered the question we’ve all been wondering since the early Bieber days: does this kid actually know what “shorty” means? The answer is no.

“I was real at first and then I was manufactured as, slowly, they just took more and more control,” he said of his producers. “I started really feeling myself too much. People love me, I’m the sh**—that’s honestly what I thought. I got very arrogant and cocky. I was wearing sunglasses inside.”

13. Justin confirms he was abusing drugs for a time

“I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed,” he said. “My mom always said to treat women with respect. For me that was always in my head while I was doing it, so I could never enjoy it. Drugs put a screen between me and what I was doing. It got pretty dark.”

14. It was his pastor’s tough love that eventually forced him to get sober

In 2014, it was Hillsong pastor Carl Lentz who took Justin out of the spotlight, sobered him up and guided him to reconnect with his faith. Justin admits to still drinking socially, but the drugs and careless promiscuity (to use Justin’s word) is behind him.

“I just wanted him to be happy and be good and be safe and feel joy,” Hailey said of his struggles. “But I’m really proud of him. To do it without a program, and to stick with it without a sober coach or AA or classes—I think it’s extraordinary. He is, in ways, a walking miracle.”

15. Justin cancelled the end of his Purpose tour to deal with depression

Justin admitted that he hasn’t spoken about what led him to cancel the last 14 shows in his Purpose tour in 2017.

“I got really depressed on tour. I haven’t talked about this, and I’m still processing so much stuff that I haven’t talked about. I was lonely. I needed some time,” he said.

16. He totally stands behind the monkey thing

You might recall the incident at the height of Bieber shenanigans when the popstar purchased a capuchin monkey who was seized by German customs shortly thereafter. Bieber admits that he was doing “a lot of the douchey things” at the time, but stands by the monkey decision.

“A lot of the douchey things I was doing gave people the right to be like, ‘Man, that’s frickin’ douchey, bro.’ But a lot of the stuff was like—me peeing in a bucket, people made such a big deal of that,” he said. “Or me owning a monkey. It’s like, if you had the money that I had, why wouldn’t you get a monkey? You would get a monkey!”

He’s got a point.
