China’s been opening some pretty spectacular hotels lately, but we think we’ve found our favourite.
Set on the coast of picturesque Yanqi Lake, the Sunrise Kempinski Hotel is Beijing’s latest must-see accommodation. With nine restaurants and bars, a spa, ballroom and fitness facilities, you’ll already have everything you need to feel like a king (or queen). But part of the beauty of this hotel is that it opens you up to the wonders of nearby Yanqi Island. That’s because the new building is simply the latest addition to a complex that features even crazier luxuries like a private marina and a nine-story pagoda.
Yeah, that’s right. A nine-story pagoda.
Not to mention Yanqi Island was the official host venue for APEC China in 2014. And if it was good enough for world leaders, then it should be fine for us commoners, right? Check it out below:
The coolest-looking hotel ever just opened in Beijing
The Sunrise Kempinski HotelThe design of this oddly-shaped building is supposed to resemble a sunrise. More than 10,000 glass panels coat its exterior, angled perfectly to reflect the sky at the top, the nearby Yanshan Mountain in the middle and Yanqi Lake at the bottom. Kempinski
What you can doFirst and foremost, we'd be heading for the nine-story pagoda we mentioned earlier (you can see it on the right) Other nearby attractions include The Great Wall of China, the Hongluo (Red Snail) Temple, Baiquan Mountain and the Qinglong Gorge. Kempinski
Boutique HotelsJust across the water on Yanqi Island sit 12 boutique hotels with their own distinctive themes (one room is based on a Chinese character that means "double happiness"). Inside, guests will be treated to on-site chefs, game rooms, swimming pools, spas and a gym.Kempinski
The Yanqi HotelOr if you'd rather stay in the 111-room Yanqi hotel, you can have your very own private balcony with an outdoor terrace featuring incredible views of the lakeside. And did we mention butler service is available?Kempinski
The foodOne of the many restaurants you'll find at the Yanqi Hotel is Waterside, a seafood outlet fittingly placed right next to the marina. The executive chef's recommendations include delicacies like lobster tail with saffron linguini or the pan-fried duck breast on lavender sauce. Is your stomach growling yet?Kempinski
Business before playThis is the conference centre that hosted the 2014 APEC Summit. And believe us, if there was ever a client you wanted to impress, this would be the place to bring them. It's billed as the largest comprehensive and luxurious multifunctional event space in mainland China!Kempinski
WhoaHere's the inside. Do we need to say more? Kempinski
Table for 20?This is where the world leaders would dine in between their meetings. Nine-metre-high ceilings boast black and gold royal colours while the painting in the background was created by China's top eight artists. Nothing short of perfection seems to make it into this room. Kempinski
Nature & WildlifeBut if relaxation is more your game, you'll be pleased to know Yanqi Lake is surrounded by all kinds of nature and wildlife, including rare migrant birds and geese. It's name literally translates as "Swans dwell on the Lake." So just try feeling stressed out here. Kempinski
Keeping it greenFor the eco-travellers out there, green living goes a long way at this place. Electricity is supplied from hydroelectric power, while LED systems provide lighting. Eco-friendly products are also used throughout the resort. If you're interested, rooms typically go for more than $200 per night. Kempinski
