If you (like us) spend approximately 30 percent of any given day gobbling up royals content, you’re about to get a big satisfying dose of it. Lifetime has just come out with the first details and photos about the upcoming sequel to last year’s Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance.

Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal — which premieres May 27th on the channel — follows Prince Harry (Charlie Field) and Meghan Markle (Tiffany Smith) for about a year after their engagement, from wedding prep through to just before Meghan’s secret NYC baby shower (which happened after filming had already wrapped in Vancouver). If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that a lot of stuff happened in that time, and in an interview with Vanity Fair, screenwriter Scarlett Lacey and Tiffany Smith dished on what we can expect to see make to the small screen.

Not one, but two weddings

Obviously the film wasn’t going to skip the Royal Wedding, but it looks like they’ll also go behind the scenes of the other nuptials Meghan Markle was part of in 2018 — the union of Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) and Rachel Zane in Suits.

“It kind of kicks things off,” Smith said of the event. “So that was kind of fun and weird. I was acting as Meghan as an actress.”

It’s a sweet tribute to Megs’ past, but the wedding we all really want to see is obviously the one between Meghan and her prince. Lacey says we’ll get front row seats to all that drama we could only imagine unfolding behind closed royal doors.

“This film deals with the drama of planning a wedding: the moment you’d much rather elope, the moment your family might mess it all up—and they nearly do!” she said. “The moment you actually walk down the aisle, the moment you first wake up as husband and wife, the realities of your new life hitting you hard, the first big fight, the first big make-up.”

Lacey added that the A-list guests (like Oprah, the Clooneys, the Beckhams, Idris Elba, Serena Williams) will “definitely play a part in the movie.” The only thing better than a Meghan and Harry movie? A Meghan and Harry movie with a George Clooney cameo.

Kate and Megs are A-OK

There’s been so. much. press on ~possible~ drama going down between Meghan and Duchess Kate, but if you’re looking for a royal cat fight, you won’t find it here. Smith says their version of the sisters-in-law has them supporting one another. Yes! We’re all about those positive and fulfilling female friendships!

“I think one of the biggest things, obviously, about Meghan is that she’s such a supporter of other women and women’s empowerment. That was something I think was important for all of us to focus on, myself included,” Smith said.

“Women can support women and uplift each other,” she continued. “Tabloids and magazines can say whatever they are going to say, but I think seeing those women and how we may have misinterpreted what maybe went on, it’s going to be exciting for fans… What I loved about the script is that it’s really positive and uplifting and paints [the royals] in a really, really beautiful light.”

Thomas and Samantha make appearances

There isn’t a way to cover this past year in the life of Meghan Markle without the inclusion of her father, Thomas Markle and her half-sister, Samantha Markle. Both family members have spent countless hours disparaging Meghan and appealing to her in the press. It seems like the film will portray them as sympathetically as possible. They are her family after all.

“Those were some of the hardest scenes to film—because I’m really close with my family, and I think you kind of got that impression [that] Meghan was close with her family, especially her dad,” Smith said. “They did have a close relationship, so how hard would that be for you, not having family members there on this massive day where you want to be surrounded by people who love you and support you?

“For some of those scenes, we really had to figure out how we wanted to handle [the drama], because we don’t know how she handled it. All I can do is look at who she is as a woman, how I felt in those moments, and, like I said, trust the director that we can bring some of that to life in the best way possible.”

Get ready for the PDA

You already were, weren’t you? Smith studied Harry and Meghan’s candid moments (like this brief candid one from their engagement interview) to make her portrayal as realistic as possible. You better believe, we’ll see every bit of PDA Meghan and Harry display publicly already plus a ton more.
