Seems like there was some division when it came to Meghan Markle‘s Givenchy wedding dress. For the most part, the public agreed it was elegant, simple and perfect for the occasion, but there were others — like Katy Perry — who didn’t think so. Bridal designer Emilia Wickstead was on Team Perry.
According to The Daily Mail, Wickstead had this to say about Clare Waight Keller’s creation: “Her dress is identical to one of our dresses. Apparently a lot of commentators were saying, ‘It’s an Emilia Wickstead dress.'”
Presumably, she meant the dress below — which, to be fair — does look similar to the one the Duchess of Sussex wore on her big day.
But Wickstead didn’t stop there, oh no. “If you choose a simple design the fit should be perfect. Her wedding dress was quite loose,” she continued. “I was like, “Hold the wisps [of her hair] back — it’s a royal wedding for God’s sake.”’ Yikes. Looks like someone wasn’t all too happy with Meghan’s look at all.
But hold up, the Emilia Wickstead Instagram account released this statement:
“I am extremely saddened by commentary that has appeared in the press and on-line over the past few days. Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Sussex looked absolutely beautiful on her wedding day and I have the utmost admiration and respect for her,” it starts.
“I do not think that her wedding dress was a copy of any of our designs. I have the greatest respect for Clare Waight Keller and the House of Givenchy—a huge source of inspiration to me. I wish Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a wonderful, happy and love filled life together.”
So what’s the truth here? Did The Daily Mail twist Wickstead’s words around or did the designer realize that Meghan’s fans weren’t about to take those loose lips lightly? One gander at the insta comments and you’ll see hell hath no fury like a Markle fan scorned.
“Your dress is nothing like the dress the Duchess of Sussex wore at her wedding. The shoulders are too low. The model’s breasts are too large. Your dress makes the model look dull and fat,” said one angry commenter. “Shame on you. Yet, excellent way to make a complete ass of yourself. Your dress could not hold a candle to Meghan’s BTW. Envy much?” said another.
Whatever the truth, we wish both parties all the best.
